I Am Not a Sports Person

By Ruth Sturm, Class of 2013

I am not a sports person.

I played soccer for a few years, and I tried basketball and volleyball. But when it comes right down to it, I just don't get sports. Football confuses me, hockey scares me, and curling...that's not even real. So even when I heard how desperate the CCM flag football team was for more female team members, it took a lot of persuading for me to join the team.

It was the most fun I've had with sports in a long time.

Since I walked into the game knowing absolutely nothing (my actual strategy was to run until someone stopped me), I was kind of nervous about making a fool of myself. Or the team. Or Elon University. Or the United States of America. But my team members were so supportive and so patient that I immediately felt at ease. I learned quickly, and with a lot of encouragement, I even scored a touchdown! I don't like football any more now than I did before I played. But I definitely have a greater appreciation for team sports than I did before.

The point is, if you're looking for something to do this fall, join CCM's intramural soccer team! And if you're thinking about how bad you are at soccer, or your lack of coordination, or any other things that would keep you from joining, just remember; this is CCM. We love everyone. Whether you're an athletic star or just someone who likes friendship, there is a place for you. I'll be there, struggling along and having the time of my life. God bless, and I hope to see you on the field!
