CCM Music Internship

Overview: A CCM Music Intern will learn about the use of music in the Liturgy, help plan and participate in weekly Mass, as well as recruit other students to participate in the choir/ensemble. Establishing and maintaining relationships with choir members is important toward growing the CCM Music Ministry. The Music Intern will be expected to contribute to the program as a singer and/or musician and will also develop an understanding of music ministry behind the scenes. Additionally, the Music Intern will receive further liturgical music formation.

Primary skills developed:

  • Lead an ensemble/assembly through worship music for Mass
  • Develop a more complete understanding of music in Liturgy
  • Learn rehearsal strategies for cantors, pianists, and ensembles
  • Communicate readily with staff regarding musical needs
  • Learn how to select music for Masses using readings, online resources, and ensemble/assembly

Responsibilities:

  • Work as a team to:
    • Pick the hymns for Sunday Mass
    • Rehearse at least one hour per week to prepare choir for Mass
    • Lead the 5:00pm Mass weekly, with rotating coverage at the 10:00am Mass
    • Communicate regularly with Music Ministry roster
    • Expand repertoire of songs for liturgies
    • Lead occasional Praise & Worship evenings
  • Recruit other students to:
    • Join the choir at Mass
    • Serve as cantor in singing the Psalm
    • Play piano, guitar, and other instruments
    • Attend weekly rehearsals
  • Utilize Google Drive to create a schedule of musicians and cantors and to track participation data
  • Continue education on the liturgy through a common book reading

Mandatory attendance:

  • Shadowing current Music Interns this spring semester to learn logistical responsibilities
  • On-campus arrival prior to the beginning of the fall semester
  • Partial-day retreat at the beginning of the next fall and spring semesters
  • Bi-weekly meeting with a CCM staff supervisor to:
    • Reflect on experience
    • Plan for upcoming liturgical seasons
    • Discuss the common book reading

Qualifications:

  • Current student at Elon University
  • Demonstrates advanced training and musical skills in vocal and/or instrumental music
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Availability on most Sundays and occasional evenings of the academic year
  • Those with interest in liturgical music, music education, or liturgy are highly encouraged to apply
  • Student must be able to fulfill the university and diocesan requirements for employment

Additional Details:

  • Estimated 4-6 hours a week
  • $15.00-$16.00 an hour
  • Reports to the Assistant Director of Communications and Engagement
