Town of Elon, N.C.Because of its idyllic small-town feel, it is home to many executives and managers who work at the corporations in the Research Triangle Park near Raleigh and in businesses located on the many corporate campuses along I-40/85 between Raleigh-Durham and the Greensboro area. The town is located in North Carolina's Piedmont region, midway between the sandy Atlantic beaches of the rugged Carolina coast and the beautiful mountains of the famed Blue Ridge Parkway. The Town of Elon is governed by a five-member board of aldermen and a mayor, and run by a town manager/finance director. It is home to a number of small businesses and a few satellite offices of major corporations. The University has more than 4,000 students representing 43 states and 36 countries. It offers 45 major fields of study, and is a private comprehensive university founded in 1889 by the Christian Church, now the United Church of Christ. Elon is the third largest of the 37 private colleges and universities in North Carolina, and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It features 50 major buildings on 502 acres and a student-faculty ratio of 16-to-1. Elon is ranked 11th among 123 Southern colleges and universities by U.S. News & World Report. In 2000, it was named the top master's-level institution in the United States by the National Survey of Student Engagement, a study that asked students across the nation to rate the quality of their educational experiences. Ashley Woods is an upscale development including dozens of homes on quiet, tree-lined streets. It is one of several upper-middle-class neighborhoods in the Town of Elon. Residents are a close-knit group despite their busy lifestyles. The Ashley Woods Women's Club, which just recently published its first list of members' e-mail addresses, sponsors many neighborhood activities, including annual Halloween and Christmas parties, Easter egg hunts and Fourth of July parades. |
