Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC)

In the liberal arts college tradition, writing has long been valued among the University's faculty. Students across the disciplines find themselves often engaged in writing, and faculty have worked to integrate writing into many of their courses. The WAC (Writing Across the Curriculum) program at Elon supports these faculty efforts to integrate writing and writing instruction.

The integration of writing into the curriculum was aided in the past by the work of Barbara Gordon, the Writing Program Director, and Steve Braye, the Writing Program Associate Director. Together, Barbara and Steve offered several workshops where faculty were presented with ways to better incorporate writing into their courses, actively shared writing pedagogies, and discussed campus writing issues. Though this important early WAC-focused work was temporarily interrupted in the mid-90's by changes in the Writing Program's administrative structure, it was revived within the more formal and visible shape of a WAC program, under the direction of Tim Peeples.

In addition to reviving faculty workshops similar to the ones made available to Elon faculty in the mid-90's, the WAC program now offers a variety of other structures aimed to help support the teaching and learning of writing across campus.
