So you want to learn how to play rugby or at least what it is?

Well here is your chance to learn or at least to gain a better understanding of the sport. Most people say it is a cross between American football and soccer- but that doesn't really explain much does it? In rugby there are no pads, helmets or protection- the "kit" is composed of cleats, socks, shorts, spandex (optional), the Jersey, and a mouth guard. That's it! Please remove all jewelry and cut your nails. Rugby is played on a Pitch- which is the length of a soccer field but wider. You play with a rugby ball which looks like an oversized football- it is bigger and a little more rounded. There are 30 players on the field- 15 from each team- plus one referee (always referred to as "sir" or "ma'am") and two touch judges. A match lasts for two 40 minute halves.

The team is split into two: the Forwards (Pack) and the Backs.

Some basic rules:
ALWAYS pass the ball backwards or laterally.
If you drop a ball- drop it behind you to prevent a Knock-on.
You must be behind the kicker before attacking the offense.
Stay off the Neck- Tackle LOW- around the knees. And be sure to wrap.
Keep hands out of a Ruck.
Touch the ball down in the try area to Score!

"I think you enjoy the game more if you don't know the rules. Anyway, you're on the same wavelength as the referees." - Jonathan Davies, A Question of Sport BBC TV
