“The undergraduate research experience may be the epitome of engaged learning” – David Lopato, 2006

Research endeavors are valuable examples of engaged learning because they involve active participation by both the student and faculty mentor.  S.O.U.R.C.E. is a venue directed at sharing basic knowledge, ideas and best practices pertaining to conducting undergraduate research.

  • Who's Invited?
    • Primarily Southeastern regional colleges and universities
    • Mentor-student pairs or groups
    • Individual mentors and/or students
  • What?
    • An opportunity to learn about, share, and reflect on mentor / student collaborative efforts in undergraduate research and creative activities.
  • Where?
    • Elon University
    • Elon, North Carolina
  • When?
    • 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 28th, 2007
  • Why?
    • Several regional and national venues exist for students and their mentors to disseminate the products/results of their collaborative efforts in undergraduate research. Few exist that serve the need from the other end – dialog on effective mentoring and student scholarship.

The goals for this workshop/symposium are to provide a venue for open discussion leading to:

  1. a deeper understanding of the benefits of undergraduate research;
  2. a better definition and elucidation of the mentor-student relationship;
  3. a sharing of ideas and best practices with colleagues and experts that may facilitate meaningful research experiences;
  4. a clearer vision of the optimum place for undergraduate research in comprehensive curricula;
  5. the delineation of realistic goals and expectations of both mentor and student.
