Demonstrative adjectives are used to describe the relative distance of the object or person from the subject. In Spanish, the demonstrative adjectives are:

This/These: next to the speaker

  Singular Plural
Masculino este (this) estos (these)
Femenino esta (this) estas (these)

Ejemplo: Prefiero esta universidad porque es pequeña. I prefer this University because it is small.

Este hombre es mi nuevo compañero de cuarto. This guy is my new roommate.

That/Those: near the speaker, but not next to
Singular Plural
Masculino ese (that) esos (those)
Femenino esa (that) esas (those)

Ejemplo: Esas mujeres viven en mi residencia estudiantil. Those women live in my dormitory.

Mi clase es en ese edificio. My class is in that building.

That/Those: far away from the speaker
Singular Plural
Masculino aquel (that) aquellos (those)
Femenino aquella (that) aquellas (those)

Ejemplo: Aquel edificio cerca de Mosley se llama Belk. That building next to Mosley is called Belk.

Aquellas residencias son para hombres. Those dorms are for men.

Demonstrative adjectives always agree with the object or person they describe.
