In 1984, two Elon students, Kirk Monroe and Doug Payne, decided to go through men’s formal rush.
After visiting the many fraternity rush parties, they decided that they were unsatisfied with the Greek
organizations here at Elon. The two then decided to form their own fraternity. They sent away for
information from many different national fraternities, among these, the three that they were
most interested in were Sigma Alpha Epsilon, DKE, and Sigma Chi. The information they received from
Sigma Chi, was a copy of the Norman Shield. When they received the information from Sigma Chi, they
were so impressed, they knew immediately what they wanted to become. Three years later on April 11, 1987
the Theta Omega chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity was installed.
