Elon vs. East Tennessee State Men's Soccer Game

Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club

After such a great first year of Day with the Phoenix, expectations were high going into the first event of the 2008-2009 season here at Elon. With the help of Coach Powell and his team, these expectations were realized in great fashion!

  • After arriving, the group of 14 students of ranging ages was led directly to the soccer team's locker room in the Koury Field House to hear from Coach Powell about their game day routine.
  • From there, three of the Phoenix players (Morgan Fleming, Jordan Neuhauser, and Daniel Street) accompanied the group to White Field where the team practices to tell them a bit about their practice regimen and helped to set up a game between the boys and the girls. (Girls won, 5-4)
  • Once the players had to leave for their pre-game meeting, the group from the Boys and Girls Club was taken up to Rudd Field to watch the conclusion of the UNC Greensboro and UNC Asheboro game.
  • As Elon's game was getting ready to start, several students were chosen and entrusted with jobs as ball-chasers and got to watch the game with the best seats in the house!
  • At half time, some of the students played a Bocce Ball-style game with the chance to win a free pizza from Dominoes while the rest of the students competed to try and score the most goals in 60 seconds for the chance to win a team-autographed soccer ball!
  • As the second half started, each student was given a hotdog to give them another boost of energy to do their chasing jobs on the field.
  • Once the game concluded, the students were each given a poster and we met the team for autographs and pictures as the players left the field.
  • Once the Boys and Girls Club was loaded up and ready to go back into Burlington, they received their final words from their Day With the Phoenix host who reminded them that they should never let anything hold them back from continuing their education in college.
A special thanks to Coach Powell and his players (especially Morgan Fleming, Jordan Neuhauser, and Daniel Street) for making these kids feel right at home at their tournament!
