A Day with the Phoenix
Mission Statement
A Day with the Phoenix is a community outreach program which devotes its time and energy to inspiring the children who live around Elon University by showing them what it's like to be a student athlete at a Division I program. Work ethic, preparation and priority are all encompassed in the definition of a student athlete at this level. Children who see and understand these concepts will know that, with whatever dreams they may have, nothing is impossible. What We Do
During football, basketball and baseball seasons, children are brought to Elon Phoenix home games. The children and their chaperones are given the opportunity for close contact with the players on these teams during special activities including tours, autograph and informative sessions, and special accesses. These activities vary with each visit based on availability. During the informative sessions, players are encouraged to share their success stories with the kids to show them how hard work can propel them to their dreams.October 10, 2009
Elon vs. The Citadel Football Game
The Boys and Girls Club of Burlington
Game Day (October 10):
- The group of 15 students and chaperones arrived at Elon Arts West parking lot and were led to the Latham Park baseball stadium where they would enjoy pizza provided by Domino's of Elon.
- As they were coming down Bank of America Drive, the jumbo-tron video crew allowed the students to show their support by recording Elon chants to later be played on the big screen during the game.
- Before entering the stadium, the group met with the Elon cheerleading team and had the opportunity to take pictures with them.
- The group then proceeded to the visitor's side of the stadium where they were able to walk down the same tunnel as the football team onto the field. They got a kick out of watching the player's warm-up before the game.
- The group was given the opportunity to play in the Phoenix Phun Zone and shop for souvenirs and concessions before the game began at 1:30.
- After the game concluded, the group had the opportunity to meet the players and receive autographs in front of Rhodes field house.
- On the walk back to the parking lot the students of the Boys and Girls Club received their final words from their Day with the Phoenix host who reminded them that there is nothing stopping them from continuing their education in college and achieving their dreams.
A special thanks to Coach Lembo, Michael Jacobs, Charlie Porterfield and Brian Tracy for showing just how important hard work and dedication is to the kids of the Boys and Girls Club of Burlington and making this Day with the Phoenix event successful.
