I got involved in Periclean Scholars after taking The Global Experience with Jim Brown. I had an opportunity to see many problems in the world from many different angles, but I didn't have an easy way to make a change. Periclean Scholars has given me an outlet to attempt to make a positive change in the world. I also get a chance to share ideas and work with others who share my interest. Originally I didn't have much interest in India, but now that I am looking at India more in depth I see how interesting and complex it is.

French (Minor)
I have already studied abroad in France (summer 2009) and plan on going abroad again in the fall of 2010. I am involved with Women's Club Soccer on campus and I represent the organization as Vice President. This has been a great leadership opportunity for me thus far, and I have hopes of leading as president in the future. My love of travel and cultures, combined with my desire for leadership, attracted me to the Periclean Scholars program. I did not have much background knowledge of India, but was eager to learn. I thought it a great opportunity to apply my International Business major in a real setting before I graduate. Periclean Scholars also allows me to reach out to a greater community. Our class of 2012 is an intelligent and inspirational group with which to work. I am honored to be a part of this team of dedicated individuals and look forward to what we can accomplish.

Intended Leisure Sports Management (Minor)
I wanted to be a Periclean scholar because I wanted to take my love for service and my passion for communication and put it to good use. I love India mostly because I have been raised somewhat immersed in its culture - with both of my parents from northern South America and some blood relatives of Indian descent, I have grown to become quite accustomed to the cuisine, language, and style of dress native to that country.  My greatest desire now is to physically experience the aspects of India I have only glimpsed briefly here in America.

I had no idea what I wanted to major in when apply for schools, or even when I arrived to Elon.  After working in India with Operation Smile the summer going into my freshman year at Elon, I knew I wanted to continue my work with both India and Operation Smile.  I realized the best major would be communications, and then I heard about Periclean Scholars and knew after getting word that the Class of 2012's country is India, I had to apply.

Environmental Studies
Geographic Information Systems, possibly Computer Science (Minors)
I decided to apply for Periclean Scholars because of a personal experience I was able to have in India. I took a trip there during high school and was able to experience the poverty first hand and wanted to continue to try and help out from back in the States. I loved the culture of India while there and the nature of the people that I worked with. The culture in the Northern States that I saw was something that I envy and admire. The respect for life and everything around it was something that drew me to want to work with India.

Ellie Stratton-Brook
Charlotte, NC
Human Services

I am a recently declared Human Services Major, and strongly considering double-majoring with English and minoring in Neuroscience. I was raised in Charlotte almost my entire life and absolutely love the wonderful state of North Carolina. When I came to college, the Periclean Scholars program greatly appealed to me because it encompassed all that I hoped to work on while at Elon, and so far the program has been a wonderful learning and rewarding experience. I hope to graduate and either do Teach for America or attend Graduate school for Library Science. Although I am an typically an avid reader of books for pure pleasure, I am busy reading books on India at the moment in order to prepare for my trip there in January. I can't wait to see India as well as work with the people of India for the next three years and hopefully beyond that.

Annie Huth

I first realized the necessity of my participation in the larger international world during my senior year of high school, when I studied abroad in Sicily. As a result of my time there, I developed a desire to learn about other cultures from their own perspectives. Periclean Scholars gives me the unique opportunity to be involved in Indian culture and to apply what I learn to my studies and efforts to be involved in the Elon/Burlington community. I am a College Fellow at Elon and am interested in combining my ECF research with my Periclean project. I am studying abroad in Pondicherry, India this Spring and can’t wait for the opportunity to participate in Indian culture and learn about working with NGOs there. I also love reading, cooking, anything outdoorsy and triathlons.
