Kolam
A traditional Sri Lankan mask, the Kolam mask, is used in
folk theater and drama dance in rural Sri Lanka. Kolam
refers to disguise and mimicry; actors wear these masks
to portray humans, animals, and demons. This particular
mask is a Naga mask, which means ‘cobra’ in Sinhalese.
These masks have strong, flaring nostrils, gaping mouth, protruding tongue, bulging eyes, a demonic face, and are
topped with writhing
cobras.
They are said to represent
protection and are designed
to

Naiyandi
Originating in the Central Hills region of Kandy in Sri Lanka
2500 years ago, the Kandyan dance is an exorcism ritual known as the Kohomba Kankariya and was originally performed by the Indian shamans. This painting is considered to portray the graceful Naiyandi dance, a dance performed during the initial preparations of the Kohomba Kankariya festival. The fire-orange background could portray the lighting of lamps and preparation of foods for the demons. In addition, the male dancers are shown with beadwork decorations on the chest and neck, a waistband, silver chains, brass shoulder plates, anklets, and
jingles.

Clay Pots
All of these clay pots are hand-carved and used for drinking.
Water is kept in the ceramic canteen because it acts like a
refrigerator to keep the water cool. Tea, a main export in
Sri Lanka, is sipped out of the cups and saucers. Most of the
designs represent components in nature such as trees, flowers,
fish, and leaves, demonstrating the Sri Lankan’s love for the environment. Some larger Sri Lankan clay pots are used to
collect rain water to help their crops grow, which is especially
useful if a good irrigation system is not present.
