Aidoo, Ama Ata (any of her books or short stories)

 Aidoo is one of Ghana’s best known writers. She had written many novels which offer insight into Ghanaian culture.


Ayi Kwei Armah 1969. The Beautyful ones are not yet Born. Heinemann.

A classic novel which explores the challenges of corruption in Ghana.


Briggs, Philip 2007.  Ghana, 4th Edition. Brandt Travel Guide.

This travel guide includes useful travel tips, an overview of Ghana’s history, and details and hotels and sites by sub-region.


Easterly, William 2006. The White Man's Burden: Why the West's Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill and So Little Good. Penguin Press.

This book includes some examples from Ghana and Africa more generally of development projects—why some worked and others did not.

Gocking, Roger S. 2005. The History of Ghana. Greenwood Press.

 This is a very accessible overview of Ghana’s history with a focus on contemporary times.

Salm, Steven J. and Toyin Falola 2002. Culture and Customs of Ghana (Culture and Customs of Africa series). Greenwood Press.

This book is a nice introduction to Ghana’s culture in general.
