In January 2006, 11 Periclean Scholars, Dr. Arcaro and Carolyn Nelson (a faculty member at Elon) traveled to Namibia for three weeks. During the trip, the Periclean Scholars traveled throughout the country to meet with numerous AIDS organizations and to learn more about how the HIV/AIDS pandemic is being combated on the ground in Namibia. The students also took 20 OVCs (orphans and other vulnerable children) camping in Etosha National park for two nights. The children were able to see wild animals they'd never seen before and were also able to document their experiences with the digital cameras each of them were given by their student 'buddies.' Lastly, the Periclean Scholars participated in the Future Leaders Summit on HIV/AIDS in Windhoek with students from the University of Namibia and the Polytechnic of Namibia. The students used research and experience to collectively compile a list of recommendations which were sent out in a press release at the end of the Summit.
