:: Receiver has record game
In 1968, Richard McGeorge set the Elon record for receptions in a game, catching 15 balls against Western Carolina and he owns most of the Elon record book when it comes to receiving.

Almost 40 years later, Elon sophomore wide receiver Terrell Hudgins is trying to rewrite those records.

On Saturday, with 9:16 left to play in the fourth quarter against the Liberty Flames, Hudgins made history. Phoenix quarterback, Scott Riddle, dropped back and threw a high-arching fade pass to the right corner of the end zone. Leaping over a defender, Hudgins snagged the ball out of the air, and just barely got his feet down to successfully pull in his 16th reception and fourth touchdown of the day.

With that catch, he broke the school’s receptions record and tied the touchdown record for a single game. Hudgins was quite modest about the accomplishment. “I credit Scott and the line,” Hudgins said.

The quarterback, as well, had nothing but praise for his teammate. “All I’ve got to do is throw it to him and he’ll catch it. He’s awesome,” said Riddle, when asked about the last touchdown catch.

What was Hudgins’ favorite touchdown of the day?

“The first one was nice,” Hudgins said.

In the first quarter, Riddle threw a short pass to Hudgins, who made a series of nice moves, while running across the field for a touchdown, to put the Phoenix up 14-0.

“A catch and run like that can dishearten a defense,” said Elon head coach, Pete Lembo.

Danny Rocco, the head coach of Liberty, would not disagree.

“[Hudgins] was outstanding,” Rocco said. “That was an embarrassment to our defense.”

Hudgins finished with 16 catches for 219 yards and four touchdowns, which is an incredible statistic line for an incredible player.

Hudgins ranks among the best nationally in all three major statistical categories for receivers. He is second in the nation in both receiving yards and touchdowns, while he is the nation’s leader in receptions for Division 1-AA.
