:: What to do at Elon
As a freshman, students may wonder what there is to do on campus. Initially, it may not look like there is a whole lot to do on campus, but first impressions may be deceiving. As a university, Elon offers a great deal of opportunities to meet people, help others, and have fun.

As a freshman, it is likely that you don’t know a whole lot of people. Freshmen are usually away from home for the first time, and may be reticent to introduce themselves to anyone and everyone. Despite what is said on the campus tour, the Zone is not the place to hang out, unless it is Thursday night at midnight.

Thursday’s, starting at 11:30, SUB hold’s a midnight meal, where students can get food, watch live musicians, and meet people.

One good way to meet people and waste some time is to hang out with the people from your Elon 101 class. One big reason that Elon requires this class is so that Elon students can have a initial group of peers to relate to, and to use as a support group for the stresses of living away from home for the first time.

For entertainment, one cheap , and free, way to spend some time is to go and watch the theater productions in the McCrary theater. Elon’s theatre department has received many awards, and is consistently of a high quality.

If money isn’t necessarily an object, there is always West End Cinema’s down the street. Half price tickets can be obtained through the school. West End is the only cinema in town, and in a one-horse town, you take what you can get.

However, the best way to get involved on campus, meet people, and have fun, by and far, is to join an organization. Elon offers a wealth of experiences, from working for school media, to the theater department, and even an equestrian team. Joining an organization will keep you occupied, help you to meet people with common interests, and give you something constructive to with your free time. Remember, don’t just do the same things that you did in high school. College is a time to try on new things, new people, and new activities. You may find that something you never figured you would do might become your passion.
