:: Club sports teams having successful spring
Elon is a growing name among the club sports teams in the region as both the mens and womens teams continue to challenge the competition.

The mens ultimate frisbee team has won two tournaments this spring and recorded an overall record of 8-11. They are part of the Ultimate Players Association [UPA] and are sectioned with schools such as North Carolina, N.C. State, Georgia and Florida.

The mens most recent tournament was N.C. States Bonanza held on March 3. The team recorded four wins, defeating Pittsburgh-B, N.C. State-B, North Carolina-B, and Duke- B. Their next tournament is at Appalachian State the first weekend of April.

The biggest tournament of the year is Sectionals, which will be held at UNC-Wilmington, April 14-15. Sectionals is the one tournament in which the Carolina area teams compete to see who will continue on to regionals and nationals.

The womens ultimate frisbee team is also having a good year with a 11-7 record.

Our team is going through a lot of changes this year, said club president junior Liz Olszewski. We lost a lot of seniors last year and the underclassmen have been stepping up to fill new roles.

Their most recent tournament was in Charleston, Feb. 24-25. They finished third place overall and went 3-3, defeating USC, Appalachian State and College of Charleston. Elon dropped two games to Chattanooga and one to Paideia College.

The women will not compete in another tournament before they accompany the men to UNC-W for Sectionals.

One of the newest club sports on campus is the cycling team. They have recently sent their application to the USA Cycling organization, which runs most collegiate cycling races in America.

We are rapidly becoming a bigger and better club, club president sophomore Kyle Pelligra said. We just received our jerseys in January, which will help us fit in and look more professional for our upcoming races.

Two members of the team were invited to participate in a race being held at N.C. State at the end of April. They will also be attending an organized 100 mile ride, beginning at Elon. The event is sponsored by the Alamance Bike Club.

The club equestrian team has competed in several spring horse shows for their league. They compete against 12 other colleges in North Carolina and Virginia and are currently ranked No. 5 in the standings.

Although we are a small team, we stand strong against other large and more intense teams, said club president junior Whyte Carter.

The womens rugby team is ranked No. 1 in their league and won a spot in the quarterfinals at the end of March against College of Charleston.

The womens next tournament is the Keystone Tournament in Philadelphia, scheduled for the second weekend of April. The tournament gives the women a chance to play northern teams such as Penn State.

It has been an amazing and growing season that no one ever expected, club president sophomore Bonnie Harvey said. Even off the field were close; we hang out together, share apartments and are going on spring break as a team.

The roller hockey team enjoyed a successful season, recording a 17-6-1 record.

They recently played in the regional tournament, March 3-4 in Snellville, Ga. The team went 1-1 in the round robin, losing to Emory and defeating UNC-Chapel Hill. In the elimination round, they beat Western Carolina and lost to Emory.

The womens club basketball team is only in its second full year as a club and is continuing to grow.

Their next tournament is at N.C. State the weekend of March 31. They are also working on competing in single weekend games and hope to host their own tournament in the near future.

The womens club softball team lost to Clemson University this past weekend at home and their next game is at Duke on April 1.

We have a lot of freshmen and quite a lot of returnees who are motivated and love the sport, club president junior Brittany Lavelle said.
