:: Respect those who sacrifice
It seems as if every time one opens the newspaper or turns on the news there is a report about the war in Iraq. Most sneer in disgust and promptly turn off the television or close the newspaper. The American population has become increasingly tired of hearing “breaking news” concerning the war, and it seems as if an increasingly large amount of the people have turned against the war as well as the Bush administration.

However, with this general turn of opinion, it seems as if most of the American population has also turned against the individuals enlisted in the service. It used to be an honorable position to serve for one’s country, being a war veteran was something to be proud of, but our society is gradually transforming into one that no longer treats these positions with respect.

There are many reasons for a young man or woman to enlist in the military. The military provides a viable career option for those who do not wish to attend college as well as those who cannot afford to. Whatever the reason, enlisting should be considered a respectable deed.

It is incredibly disgraceful that some are scorned for following their honorable ambition and enlisting. It is a career that should be respected by all. Portia Skenandore-Wheelock, a personal friend and a freshman at Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y., recently became engaged to a young man who is in the Army. Skenandore-Wheelock has always been opposed to the war in Iraq, yet she realizes that one can be opposed to the war, but still support the troops.

“I’d say a lot of people blame the troops for the war, their frustration is understandable but they have to remember that it isn't reasonable to judge every person involved,” she said, “and no matter how unjustified a war is, it is vital that we all have respect for the people that put their lives on the line to protect their country.”

I’m certain it is a difficult task to leave one’s family and loved ones behind and go into a dangerous war-zone, yet thousands of military personnel do just that on a daily basis. Many loved ones are forced to wait in fear for either a letter or phone call from the loved one at risk, or the bad news that is delivered by military personnel. It is important for our nation to support these individuals who are forced into a constant state of worry.

It is vital that we all remember not to scorn those who have chosen to risk their own lives to protect what they believe in as well as their nation and its people. If one is risking his or her life to defend the rights and beliefs of others they should be treated with respect, they should not be berated.

Whether you support the war or not, it is incredibly important that you always show respect and support for those fighting in it!

These brave men and women do not serve for any particular policy decision, but serve to protect the U.S. Constitution, the U.S. Government, and the American people. They should not be blamed for the shortcomings in policy they have no part in designing.
