:: SGA term winds down after elections
Lame duck SGA officers will continue with their responsibilites as they discuss two new pieces of legislation at their weekly meeting tonight.
The winners of last week’s SGA elections were announced Wednesday night. The new executive staff is as follows: Robert Saunders, president; John Bateman, vice president; Chase Rumley, secretary and Cassandra Hickey, treasurer. The new SGA term begins March 29, at the Organization Awards and Inaugural Ceremony (OAIC). Winners of the OAIC awards will be announced, and the new officers will officially take their positions at this time.Although the new executive staff was named, the current officers will still handle most SGA affairs throughout the transition period, as they did at last week’s meeting. At the Feb. 22 senate meeting, members of the SGA executive, at-large, academic, and organization councils, as well as SGA Advisor Jana Patterson, met in Moseley for their weekly meeting. Representatives from the Campus Climate Challenge presented first, speaking of Elon’s newly proposed Sustainability Plan. Their goal is to get students involved with the plan. Accordingly, the members asked for SGA to work alongside their organization to reach out to students. A Sustainability Plan Forum will be held on March 7, from 3 to 5 p.m. in Whitley Auditorium. The final topic of discussion during the open forum was the issue of an increase in number of Alcohol Law Enforcement stationed on campus. According to members of SGA, the ALE will increase the patrol of Elon following the incident involving senior Lee Mynhardt. Senior class senator LaToya Smalls reported that last week’s SGA election results proved to be the largest voting turnout in the history of Elon, with a 23 percent increase over last year’s voting turnout. Michael Bumbry, current SGA president, addressed the issue of money raised for Lee Mynhardt, stating that under normal circumstances, SGA does not fund personal projects for senior seminar. “This particular cause is very important, and effects not only Elon University, but the entire Elon community,” he said.
