:: Indoor track ends season at record high
New record holders Dominique Price
60-meter hurdles: 8.67 seconds 60-meter dash: 7.88 seconds Kimberly Abel Pentathalon: 3,056 points Monique Vines Long Jump: 5.7 meters Caitlin Beeler 3,000-meter run: 10:19:05 Junior athlete Dominique Price, who set school records in both the 60-meter hurdles and the 60-meter dash, said that she hopes the team will continue to improve and that more people will pay attention to their accomplishments. “We’re trying to get more people to actually realize that we are here, we exist,” Price said. To establish a reputation as a quality program, the team has taken it upon themselves to target the record books. Price, sophomore Kimberly Abel, freshman Monique Vines and freshman Caitlin Beeler also set school records in the Southern Conference Championships. Abel scored 3,056 points in the pentathlon surpassing the previous record of 2,999 set by Julia Hicks last season. Vines leaped to a record 5.70 meters in the long jump breaking the record of 5.50 meters. In the 3,000-meter run, Beeler ran a time of 10:19:05 to break the previous record set by teammate sophomore Anna Mae Flynn last month. Although these records demonstrate personal success, Price said that one of the biggest accomplishments made during the indoor season was the team bonding. “I think everybody’s finally learning how to be a team,” she said. “Since track is individual, it’s kind of hard to also be a team, so we’re all learning to support each other.” Vines also noticed the team unity as she recalled the sense of pride she felt when Price and senior pole-vaulter Jessica Clendenning were named to the All-Southern Conference indoor track team. “I was kind of surprised by my own reaction, just because I haven’t been on the team that long,” Vines said. “For me to be excited about one of my teammates that won, I realized that I really care about the team.” For Price, it was an honor to be recognized for her efforts this season. “It’s nice to be put in the spotlight for a change,” she said, “I’ve been working hard and I’m glad that I finally met my goal.” Reporter: Kris Moody - 03/01/07
