:: Village Grill serves up warm atmosphere
Since swiping a meal plan at Varsity doesn’t count as a date, people have to look around Burlington. Village Grill provides a good Friday night date scene – it’s a little more expensive than the average pizzeria, but it has great food and a nice southern atmosphere. For something other than steak and chicken, it’s an excellent place for fresh seafood at a reasonable price.
The restaurant is large and family-oriented. They accommodate everyone from small children to college students to senior citizens. The service is both fast and helpful, with immediate seating. There are different seating areas with the kitchen enclosed in glass in the middle. The menu has a Key West, Florida-style theme, helping set it apart from other local restaurants. It offers different seafood, steak and “Key West Chicken.” There are various spices mixed into each dish, such as the Lime Cilantro Salmon and Calypso Marinated Steak. I ordered the voodoo shrimp cocktail and the grilled salmon with Jamaican relish and Cajun spices. The meal came with bread and pepper-infused olive oil, a salad and a choice of side. The cocktail sauce in my appetizer was outstanding – it was very spicy yet still refreshing. The shrimp were extremely fresh and cooked wonderfully. The salmon dish was also good. It’s hard to find fresh seafood around Burlington, so this was a special treat. However, my side of steamed vegetables was nothing special. The salmon was coated in jerk spice, a nice touch and added to the taste of the fish. The relish was interesting – both spicy and sweet – but I didn’t end up eating very much of it. The best part of my meal was the dessert. They offer homemade Key Lime Pie. It had a succulent graham cracker crust with a gooey cream cheese filling. This pie was absolutely delicious – it’s made with real key lime juice so it tasted just like pie served in the Keys. The menu also offers salads, chicken sandwiches, cheeseburgers and other seafood platters. Both beer amd wine are served here. My entire meal was a little steep for lunch – it totaled $30; however, the appetizer and salad were enough for one person. The salmon was $16.95 and the shrimp cocktail was $7.95, but one or the other would have been fine. It also offers salads from around $7-$10 and desserts are all in the $5 range. This restaurant is a nice, casual place to dine. I would give the restaurant three and a half stars out of five. Reviewer: Emilie Gitlitz - 02/15/07
