Phoenix drops conference game, falls to 2-4 following 31-7 loss
Kristin Simonetti - Reporter

We’ve got good news, and we’ve got bad news.

The good news is Phoenix linebacker Eddie Bell became Elon’s first Southern Conference Player of the Month. Bell was honored as Defensive Player of the Month for September following a 36 tackle, one sack performance. He also registered one forced fumble and two blocked kicks. His tackle total is a team high.

The bad news is the Phoenix finds itself in a two-game losing streak for the second time this season, and faces a tough challenge Saturday against the Wofford Terriers.

Last November, the Terriers won big against the Phoenix, 34-9 at Rhodes Stadium. Wofford is coming off a 42-14 victory against conference foe University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Bulldog fullback J.R. McNair rushed for 127 yards and a Southern Conference record five touchdowns against the Mocs in Chattanooga. The Terriers lead the lifetime series against Elon, 17-9.

The Phoenix though, lost to the Bulldogs of The Citadel in Charleston last Saturday, 31-7. The Phoenix defense struggled mightily against a potent Bulldog offense that tallied up 416 total yards on the day. Broughton scored three of The Citadel’s four touchdowns and contributed to a total of 243 rushing yards for the Bulldogs. Quarterback Willie Simmons threw for 173 yards and a touchdown.

Anthony Crews started at quarterback for the Phoenix and completed just two of ten passes for eight yards and an interception. Rashaud Palmer paced the Phoenix with 103 rushing yards.

"We had a few chances in the first half and did not get it done," Elon head coach Al Seagraves said. "The game was exactly what I expected it to be, a dogfight."

Willie Simmons wasted no time putting The Citadel on the scoreboard, throwing a 53-yard pass to Scooter Johnson for a touchdown in the first quarter. After that, Broughton and the Bulldog running game took control. He scored from one yard out with under three minutes to play in the first half, sending The Citadel into halftime with a 14-0 lead.

Broughton continued dominating in the second half, scoring on a 63-yard run on the Bulldogs’ opening drive of the second half. Later in the third quarter he scored his third touchdown of the day, a nine-yard run to make the score 28-0. Travis Zobel finished up the day’s scoring with a 41-yard field goal at the end of the third quarter, leaving The Citadel’s lead at 31-0.

The Phoenix scored an inconsequential touchdown at the end of the fourth quarter, on Marcus Johnson’s five-yard run following a Bulldog turnover.
