Basketball in North Area would have
consequences Letter I’m writing this in regard to a recently published letter that presented the idea of putting in a basketball court someplace in the North Area. Living in North Area, the beautiful building of Colclough to be specific, this proposal sparked a great interest in my fellow suitemates and me. As pointed out, the North Area is the only section of campus that is without an outdoor basketball facility. First impressions were that of great excitement, for combining the game of basketball with the beautiful North Carolina weather seemed like a win-win situation. However, upon further review of this idea, the negatives that would come with putting in such a court in the North Area were not presented. Looking at the landscape of North Area, there is not much to work with, especially considering the amount of space needed for a basketball court, whether it be full or half. One of the locations mentioned as a possibility was the courtyard found behind Colclough, Maynard and Chandler. Putting a court there would take away a popular getaway for students looking for a quiet place to study, read, or just enjoy the great outdoors. It would disrupt the entire aura of such a peaceful little courtyard. Basketball is not a quiet sport. The yelling from player to player and the often annoying echo of a basketball being repeatedly bounced off hard pavement would just add to the noise levels we are already exposed to while living in a college dorm. Living in the North Area, we are lucky enough to be neighbors with our fine recreational facility, which consists of two indoor basketball courts. If it is the outdoor balling one is itching for, a court is nearby. Nowhere on the campus of Elon is there too long of a walk. Taking a stroll to JC or Danieley from the North Area is not going to kill anyone, and if it is a problem then maybe that person should not be playing basketball in the first place. - Ben O’Meara |
