Literary magazine to be released Tuesday Kate Bradley - Reporter
This year’s literary magazine will be unveiled at College Coffee Tuesday. The winners of the magazine’s annual contest will be awarded by the Colonnades staff. "We are excited about the unveiling because it will show off a year’s worth of hard work," said fiction editor Jane Steele Matt Fiander, editor-in-chief of Colonnades, called this year’s magazine "something for the staff and the school to be proud of." After being left to print the 2001-2002 edition of the magazine first semester, the staff was able to print two magazines in one year. The quality of this year’s literary magazine is "as good as many national literary journals I’ve seen," Drew Perry, the faculty adviser, said. "It was hard to cut certain pieces, because they were all pretty good submissions; none of them were outwardly inadequate" Steele said. Perry was enthusiastic about the content and quality of this year’s magazine. "It has been a pleasure to be the advisor to a truly student- run organization," he said. "There will be a color cover this year, and the content is excellent. There is twice as much in this edition as in the last, and I think our selections are on par with better known literary journals," Fiander explained. He mentioned that many students are unaware of the existence of a literary magazine, and the event at College Coffee should give more students access and exposure to the magazine. The Colonnades staff awards students for their contributions in the categories of art, photography, poetry, fiction and non-fiction. Awards were given to students for their poetry and fiction entries to the magazine. This year’s staff consists of Jane Steele, fiction editor; Matt Fiander, editor-in-chief; Jenn Aglio, poetry editor; and Sarah Umberger, layout editor. The staff reviewed all pieces through a blind process, meaning that they did not know who the author of the piece was during the review process. This ensures that submissions were reviewed "solely based on quality," Perry said. This year’s judge was Terry Kennedy, the editor of the Greensboro Review and a professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The winners of this year’s contest are listed on the Colonnades Web site, under construction for the first time in four years. In the poetry section, Paula Scherer won first place for her poem "One Mother." Second place was awarded to "Machine" by Erin McDermott and third place winner was Jennifer Phelps, former editor of the magazine, for "Lady Bujeau." In the fiction category, first place was given to Irene Harvley-Felder for "All the Years." The second place award was given to Matt Fiander, for "The Earner." Charter Woodruff won third place for "The Taste of Crazy." |
