  Women’s golf finishes season strong
Kristin Simonetti - Reporter

A solid final-round performance guided the Phoenix women’s golf team to a fourth-place tie Tuesday at the Big South Conference Championship tournament in Sunset Beach, N.C. The Phoenix tied Birmingham Southern with a three-day total of 981. The University of North Carolina at Wilmington took home the conference championship and earned its second trip to the NCAA Women’s Golf Regional in as many years.

The five Phoenix golfers each finished in the top 20 of the tournament. Morgan Olds shot a 79 in the final round to move into a tie for 10th place, a performance that earned her All-Big South honors. Sammy Sue Wilson followed in 13th place with a three-day total of 245. Katie Knoepffler finished 14th, followed by Alison Mangini in a tie for 18th. Knoepffler was one of four golfers named to the Big South’s All-Academic team on Monday night.

The Phoenix entered the final round alone in fourth place following Monday’s second round. Knoepffler, Olds and Wilson tied for 13th place with two-day totals of 165. Mangini fell to 21st place, followed by Poindexter in a tie for 24th.

The Phoenix played to a first-round tie for third place with Charleston Southern University on Sunday. Knoepffler and Olds both shot 81 on the first day, tying for seventh place. Mangini finished in 17th place, followed by Wilson in 21st and Poindexter in a tie for 29th place.

The tournament capped a successful season for the Phoenix. They captured the Shamrock Invitational tournament in March, overcoming a seven-shot deficit in the third round. Knoepffler shot a third-round and tournament-low 74, finishing second overall in the 71-golfer event. For her efforts, Knoepffler earned Big South Golfer of the Week honors the following week. Wilson also earned Big South Golfer of the Week distinction following her performance at the William and Mary Invitational in late March. She shot a team-best 77 in the only round of the rain-shortened tournament, tying for 16th place out of 118 golfers. The Phoenix finished the tournament 10th out of 22 teams.
