Monday marked the beginning of Greek Week, when Elon fraternities and sororities join together for various games and events.

Last week, members of Sigma Chi fraternity hosted Derby Days, during which the sororities helped raise money for their philanthropy, The Children’s Miracle Network. Each sorority put on a show and the proceeds from the entrance fees were donated to their charity.

"Greek Week will bring people together inside the sorority as well as join all sororities in unity. It’s going to be a lot of fun," said Lindsey Andrews, a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority.

Monday was designated Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day. The women hosted breakfast for faculty and staff and the men hosted lunch. There was also a car wash to show appreciation in Loy Center. The fraternities had a volleyball competition and the sororities competed in soccer.

Tuesday was Letter Day, with all members sporting their Greek letters. That night, fraternities and sororities hosted a carnival for the children of faculty and staff members. On Wednesday, the Greek members attended a speaker in Alumni Gym.

Greek men and women competed in various sports throughout the week. The men participated in football, soccer, baseball and volleyball, in addition to competing in a Quiz Bowl match. The women played soccer, volleyball, flag football and basketball. They also had a Quiz Bowl match.

Throughout the week, members were competing against themselves to be declared the Greek Week winner.

"I believe that A O Pi has a good shot at winning the week—we have a lot of strong girls, a hot dance that we’ve been working hard on, but we’ll see. The whole point of the week is for each fraternity and sorority to get to know each other better and show their pride for their letters as well as show off individuals in their groups," said Annie McQuaid, a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority.

Tonight all Greek members will come together for the dance competition at 8 p.m. All students are welcome to attend. There is a $3 entrance fee, or $2 with a toiletry item. The funds and supplies will be donated to local needy churches for underprivileged children and families.

The week will end with a semi-formal dance to help all Greek organizations relax after a week of competition.

"The ultimate goal is to win. Pi Kapp has won in the past and we hope to get back the winning title from the Kappa Sigs who won last year. It will hopefully improve relationships with other frats, and is just friendly competition," said Ben Seay, Pi Kappa Phi member.

On Sunday, awards will be handed out to the organizations that earned the most points. Points are obtained by winning sporting events.

First place typically receives 40 points, second place gets 30 points and third place will be awarded 20 points.

Alpha Omicron Pi was last year’s winning sorority.

"We hope to get as many sisters involved as possible to improve the spirit of A O Pi. Hopefully we will come together more strongly and win maintain our winning title from last year," McQuaid said.
