  Pearl Jam rocks Raleigh crowd
Mike Aceto - Reporter

"What Would Jesus Bomb" read Eddie Vedder’s T-shirt as Pearl Jam came through with another stellar performance on their 2003 tour.

The Alltel Pavilion at Walnut Creek in Raleigh was the perfect setting for the April 15 show as the hard-rock opener Sleater-Kinney started the evening by playing a relatively decent seven song set comprised of fairly tight songs despite tantalizing vocals.

As soon as Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready hit the first note to the opener, "Evenflow," Mary Jane was lit and the show began.

Vedder’s voice sounded as brilliant, clear, and unique as it did in the early ’90s when "Ten" was released.

On this tour Vedder is making his political stance known. He sported his liberal anti-war bombing message on a T-shirt with a picture of President George W. Bush. The crowd was mainly comprised of the younger generation except for a few parents rocking out like it was Woodstock. McCready and guitarist Stone performed like veterans of rock n’ roll playing faultlessly during the entire show along with drummer Matt Cameron. Vedder and company played six songs off of their new album "Riot Act" and the fan favorite was definitely "I Am Mine."

Many fan favorites were played much to the crowd’s pleasure, as the audience sang along with "Alive," "Corduroy" and "Betterman."

It was amazing to see Pearl Jam play some unanticipated live material such as "Glorified G" and "Porch." The crowd went wild when Vedder announced "I Got S**t," a song the band collaborated on with Neil Young. Vedder made spontaneous song selections, showing the unpredictability of exactly what Pearl Jam will play live. Only a third of the material came from the new album and their set-lists have been fairly deviant during this tour.

After the first encore, Pearl Jam came out again to team with Sleater-Kinney to play a riveting version of "Fortunate Son" and closed with an astounding version of "Keep On Rock’n in the Free World."

The concert was a huge success and there is no way any fan was disappointed after the impressive performance by Pearl Jam.
