Servals are one of the least engendered species of wild cat. It is in danger, though, because its coat is sometimes sold by humans under the guise of it being a young cheetah or leopard.

The destruction of the habitats of servals has put them into closer contact with humans. As a result, they are sometimes killed by farmers as servals like to eat poultry.

Servals have also been bred by humans to create a hybrid known as the "savannah cat," a mixture of serval and domestic cat, which is controversial practice.
