2008-09 Grant Opportunities

The MLK Challenge – North Carolina

NC Campus Compact is one of seven national lead agencies in promoting the 2009 Dr. Martin LutherKing Jr. Day of Service. The MLK Day of Service honors the life of Dr. King. It is also a way of reminding all Americans of their civic duty to serve, as well as helping members of the community to work together to solve common problems. The 2009 MLK Day of Service is January 19.

While NC Campus Compact will provide funding to support institutions of higher education throughout the United States, we will provide $8,000 in direct funding to individual institutions or regional consortia in North Carolina to promote the MLK Day of Service 2009.  The goal is to mobilize at least 2500 volunteers to complete service projects throughout the state of North Carolina while reflecting on Dr. King’s life.  Grantees will organize projects that assist local agencies in expanding or improving their abilities to help the people they serve. The MLK Challenge breaks down barriers amongst participants and between the students and their local community using a unique program model that frames the day as a “challenge” utilizing the resources, creativity and planning ability of each team or group of young people. In addition to unifying diverse participants around a service project, the MLK Challenge provides opportunities for participants to reflect upon, honor and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr Martin Luther King Jr.  All NC Campus Compact member campuses are eligible to apply for an MLK Challenge grant.
