Nomination Deadline Next Friday for Community Impact Student Awards

NC Campus Compact is now accepting nominations from member campuses for this annual award that is presented to students who have made significant, innovative contributions to campus-based efforts to address community needs. Each member institution may choose one winner to represent their campus.

 

The award recipients will be recognized at the 2009 Student Conference. Visit this link to see highlights from previous years and to download the 2009 nomination packet. The nomination deadline is October 2, 2009.

PACE Conference Call for Proposals

NC Campus Compact is now accepting workshop proposals for the 2010 PACE Conference on February 10, 2009.  This annual conference provides participants with valuable information and skills they can utilize in their civic engagement work. Workshops, presented by faculty, staff, students and community partners,  provide "how to", "best practice" and "research and theory" information and resources for any aspect of civic engagement work, including curricular and co-curriculuar courses, projects and programs and capacity-building and institutionalization efforts.  
 
The proposal deadline is November 6, 2009. Registration opens on November 12, 2009.

Elon's Kernodle Center Begins "Get on theE-net! image (see caption if available)  Bus" Fall Program

The Kernodle Center for Service Learning at Elon University recently launched a new program to help students explore volunteer opportunities available to them in Alamance County and surrounding areas.  The six-week program offers students free transportation to selected community partners each Friday.

Nourish International Sponsors Carolina HopeFest 2009

Carolina HopeFest brings together singers/songwriters to benefit grassroots sustainable development in Africa. The fifth annual HopeFest will benefit the work of Nourish International, a student led movement to eradicate global poverty. Proceeds will be MATCHED by Nourish International's chapters located across the country to double the HopeFest impact!

A benefit concert featuring the Grammy Award Winning Indigo Girls and acclaimed singer/songwriter Matt Nathanson, best known for his chart-topping hit "Come on Get Higher."

When: September 27th  Gates open at 5 p.m. Music goes until p.m

2009 National Learn & Serve Challenge

October 5-12, 2009

The National Learn & Serve Challenge is a sustained, focused effort to promote youth civic engagement and service-learning, a hands-on teaching method that engages young people in solving problems within their schools and communities as part of academic studies and other out-of-school time learning activities. The Challenge is supported by nearly 100 local, state, and national organizations (including Campus Compact) committed to engaging in service-learning in our nations schools, college campuses, and communities.


Young people-from elementary to college age-will help rebuild and renew their local or global community by using the content knowledge and skills learned in the classroom or a community-based program to create and implement innovative solutions to problems within five priority areas:

  • Community renewal, including responding to the economic crisis
  • Education, including literacy and keeping kids in school
  • Energy and the environment
  • Health and nutrition
  • Safety and security

The Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) Launches A Campaign to Promote Service

During the week of October 19, the four national networks (ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC) will include service-oriented programming in their daytime, primetime, and news programming.  Watch for it and strategize now about how you can capitalize upon this with your local network affiliates.  Learn more about the EIF campaign at www.iParticipate.org.

Cities of Service Initiative Launches

On September 10th, Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City brought together 20 mayors from around the country to kick off a national Cities of Service initiative.  The goal of the initiative is to help mayors across the country to engage volunteers in their localities to address critical community needs.

Smithsonian Education Free Online Conference Series on "Climate Change"

Designing an Effective Service-Learning Course and Meaningful Syllabus (webinar)

Innovative Educators is sponsoring this course to help service-learning faculty to match their desired service-learning courses to appropriate, developmental service-experiences and reflections throughout the semester.  It will take them through the idea stage, to community collaboration in course design, to syllabus development, to constructing productive assignments to exams or other culminating experiences.  The session will be as interactive as possible so participant questions about course construction can be individually addressed.

2009 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll 

Last year 34 North Carolina institutions were named to the 2008 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) Announces Winners of AmeriCorps Video and Photo Contest

On September 18, 2009, CNCS announced the winners of its 2009 AmeriCorps Video and Photo contest. Linda Raynes, a second-year AmeriCorps member serving with Plus Time New Hampshire AmeriCorps, won first place for her video “Use These,” which highlights the ways AmeriCorps members change their communities through service.  Sarah Bass, who served two AmeriCorps terms with Teach for America in Los Angeles, won first place in the photo division for her picture “Sowing Seeds of Hope, which captures the experience of AmeriCorps by showing the hands of a 12-year-old holding seeds of wheat before planting.

The contest was part of the third annual AmeriCorps Week, a national recruitment and recognition event that took place May 9 through 16. The contest, which was open solely to AmeriCorps members and alums, drew more than 40 video and 325 photo submissions.  All of the entries can be viewed at the AmeriCorps Video and Photo Contest website at www.AmeriCorpsContest.org. The contest is part of the agency’s efforts to use new media and Web 2.0 strategies to support recruitment and other programmatic goals.

Washington Monthly Rankings Released

Washington Monthly has released their 2009 national university college rankings. They rate schools based on their "contribution to the public good" in three broad categories: Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs), and Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).

 Duke University, East Carolina University, North Carolina A &T, NC State, UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro and Wake Forest all made the list and Duke University was ranked #7 in Service.  For an explanation of each category, click here. The national Campus Compact website has an easy-to-use posting section at http://www.compact.org/post-your-own/. Here you can submit news, resources, jobs, volunteer opportunities, calendar events, professional development opportunities, and more. The process is quite simple. You post the opportunity and then Campus Compact staff give it the final OK within two days of your posting and then it's up. This is a great way for you to spread the word about the good work you are doing and to spread information you want to get out to a broad audience.
