NC Campus Compact Welcomes New MLK VISTA

This month Kara Brown began serving as the NC Campus Compact MLK Americorps*VISTA.  A recent graduate of Appalachian State University, Kara is well acquainted with NC Campus Compact as a former (3 time) presenter at the student conference, winner of a Community Impact Student Award, and member of the student conference Planning Committee.

Through ACT Kara helped to engage students in community service opportunities through her involvement with the impACT team, and also served for two years as student-chair and site development coordinator of ASU’s MLK Challenge event.  As a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, Kara helped to found ASU’s first Relay for Life, and spent summer 2007 cycling across the country with the Hopkins 4k for Cancer to raise money for cancer research.

As the MLK VISTA, Kara will assist in the promotion and implementation of the NC Campus Compact MLK Day of Service grant, working with colleges and universities across the U.S. Kara can be reached at kbrown37@elon.edu or (336) 278-7125.

Seeking 1st Generation and/or Minority Students for Facilitated Discussion

In 2007, NC Campus Compact launched the Next Generation North Carolina Initiative to explore ways that the Compact can assist member campuses in the success and retention of first generation and/or minority students. During the 2008 Student Conference on Saturday, November 8, 2008,  in order to understand some best practices that can be generalized for NC Campus Compact member institutions, the Next Generation NC Task Force will conduct a facilitated discussion to learn about the experiences of these students who are currently civically engaged at their institution.

The primary contact from each member campus is asked to identify a student, who is coming to the student conference, that fits the criteria below. The primary contact should invite that individual to participate in the facilitated discussion during the conference.  The discussion will be just one session (50 minute), so participants will still be able to attend at least three additional conference sessions.

Criteria for Dialogue participation:

  • All participants must be a first generation college studentHope to represent African American, Latino, and American Indian communitiesA sophomore, junior or senior attending a NC Campus Compact member institution  Prefer those involved in campus civic engagement activities
  • One planning to be at the 2008 NC Campus Compact Student Conference at High Point U.

E-mail the student’s name and email address by Friday, October 10, 2008 to Jamarl Clark,Project Coordinator AmeriCorps* VISTA. Let Jamarl know of the student’s willingness to be contacted regarding the facilitated discussion and her/his desire to participate.
