American Democracy Project National Meeting

June 12 - 14, 2008, Snowbird, Utah

Call for Proposals

We are interested in presentations that cover both theoretical and practical issues:  concepts of citizenship, civic engagement, and democracy in higher education; descriptions of programs and practices.  When submitting proposals about programs and practices, please be sure that you address analysis as well as description:  what worked and what didn't; what were the issues encountered during implementation; how were partners brought in; etc.  We are also interested in topics that focus particularly on civic skills and the assessment of civic outcomes-two areas that have not been sufficiently addressed in our work so far.

To submit a proposal for a presentation:

1.       Review the suggested list of topics and the description of the sessions (click here)

2.       Go the "Submit a Proposal" section at the end of this form, click on the URL, and complete the online proposal entry form:

http://www.zoomerang.com/survey.zgi?p=WEB226ZNJV7XJY

Proposals are due by January 21, 2008.  However, proposals can be submitted immediately, and we will begin a rolling process of acceptance December 1, 2007.  This earlier date may provide you with an opportunity to identify a source of funding support sooner, as well as help clarify summer plans.

If you have questions about the submission process, please contact Cecilia Orphan, National American Democracy Project Coordinator, at (202) 478-7833 or orphanc@aascu.org.  For logistical information about the meeting, please contact Jill Gately, Program and Meetings Manager, ALC, at

National Urban Initiatives Competition ($60,000 Award)

In anticipation of the Congressional interest in new and creative urban policy initiatives and the need for the national administration’s attention to the domestic agenda, Clark University (Worcester, MA), Community Development Training Institute (Newport, RI), Freddie Mac (Washington, DC), University of Massachusetts Amherst (Amherst, MA), and the National Community Development Association are seeking the submission of proposals to a National Urban Initiatives Competition.

The program is seeking proposal abstracts that are practical, creative, and are well rooted in theory. Proposal abstracts should translate from theory to model or vice versa. For example, an exemplary existing project or activity can be transformed or explained by a generic model that is well rooted in theory. Furthermore, it should be feasible to enact into new legislation.

This is neither a purely academic exercise nor a best practice competition. Although the program is seeking proposals for the domestic urban agenda, it is recognized that non-domestic research, literature, projects and activities proposed -- especially in developing countries -- may be relevant and such innovations are encouraged to the extent they represent potentially viable models for the United States.

Proposal abstracts will be accepted in each of the following categories:

1) affordable and sustainable housing, 2) neighborhood based economic development, and 3) financial services to low-income communities. An award of $20,000 will be given to winners in each of the three categories. There will also be three $2,500 cash awards given to the second place winners of each category. Total awards will amount to over $65,000.

Proposal Abstracts will be due January 25, 2008. Details at http://clarku.edu/departments/idce/researchActivities_CDTI.cfm

The applicant package can be downloaded at http://clarku.edu/departments/IDCE/docs/NUIC_applicant_pkg.pdf

Australian Universities Community Engagement Alliance National Conference
"Engaging for a Sustainable Future"
July 9 - 11, 2008, Sunshine Coast & Fraser Island, Queensland, Australia
  NEW!

Call for Papers

Tailored for the research and academic, corporate, and government sectors, the conference will present a dynamic program of keynote addresses, panel discussions, and presentations of cutting-edge research; while also incorporating case study break-out sessions on putting University-Community Engagement into practice.

Under the banner of "Engaging for a Sustainable Future" the conference will address four sub-themes on University-Community Engagement:

Responding to the needs of the region / community
In this theme we are interested in those experiences and settings that highlight the determinants of creating quality and sustainable partnerships between the university and its region and community.

Measurement and evaluation
This will explore the way engagement processes and the outcomes to which they contribute are assessed in the institution and the community, and how continuous improvement results from these assessments.

Theory and policy development
These are lessons we have learnt locally and internationally that help us towards identifying the key factors in furthering the development of theory and institutional policy as it impacts on the sustainability of regions and communities through access to knowledge and university engagement.

Local engagement with a global importance
In this theme we are interested in those university engagement initiatives that are bringing about significant change at the community level in areas that are globally important - now and into the future, across the economic, social, cultural and environmental spectrum, as well as providing engaged learning and research for students.
