Get Ready to “Color Outside the Lines” During the 2009 Student Conference!

NC Campus Compact and the 2009 Student Advisory Board are looking forward to seeing the 21 campuses that have registered for 2009 Student Conference, November 6-7 at Western Carolina University. The Conference promises to be exciting and informative with 28 workshops and acknowledgement of the 25 student leaders who will receive the Community Student Impact Award and the NC Governor’s Certificate of Appreciation for Volunteers.

Campus Compact Annual Membership Survey Now Open

We encourage every NC Campus Compact member campus to complete theannual Campus Compact national survey. Conducted each year since 1986, the survey is the most comprehensive and widely distributed review of service, service-learning, and civic engagement in higher education. Results allow campuses to compare their progress with state and national trends and help all of us better articulate our case to elected officials, funders, and the media.

The deadline for completion of the survey is December 4, 2009. For best results, we urge you to download the PDF version to review the entire survey and then complete the survey online.

Survey results will be posted on our website in the spring of 2010. You can view last year's results at http://www.compact.org/about/statistics/.

Campus Compact Seeking Experiential Philanthropy Courses

As part of the Students4Giving philanthropy, national Campus Compact will be supporting faculty research related to student philanthropy.  A broader "learning community" of researchers interested in student philanthropy is being convened to provide a means for people doing this work to share resources and information.  David Campbell, a faculty member at Binghamton University will be assisting with the learning community.

David's research is focused on the extent and nature of experiential philanthropy courses (courses with a giving component) at colleges and universities nationwide.  Do you know of any experiential philanthropy courses that have operated in the past five years, but are not already part of the Pay It Forward, Students4Giving or the Sunshine Lady Foundation network?  If so, please contact Maggie Grove,
Campus Compact Consultant.

AppState Service-Learning Faculty Member Helps Launch Operation Medicine Cabinet

Dr. Shea Tuberty (Biology) was an ACT (Appalachian and the Community Together) Faculty Fellow last fall and taught his first service-learning class (Environmental Toxicology) this past spring. As a result of some water testing projects, his students found that many of the male fish in the New River had been "feminized," and they suspect that it is from people flushing drugs (probably BC pills) down the toilet.

Over the summer, Shea launched a county-wide campaign involving nearly 25 businesses and organizations to create Operation Medicine Cabinet -- a drug collection program to keep outdated meds out of our waterways and out of the hands of our children.  The first ever program happened this past weekend and the Watauga County sheriff has been asked to write up how they organized the program as a national case study since it was so successful! Read more at the links below.

UNC-Pembroke Takes Larger Role in President’s Volunteer Program

UNCP's Center for Leadership and Service (CLS) has become a certifying organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award, a national program recognizing Americans who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to volunteer service. CLS, which facilitates student volunteer and community service programs, was enlisted to deliver the President’s Volunteer Service Award to honor volunteers. As a certifying organization, CLS is responsible for verifying service hours, nominating potential recipients and delivering the award. Previously, the award went to institutions instead of individuals.

Established in 2003 by President George W. Bush, the award was created to give recognition to individuals, families and groups who meet requirements for volunteer service, as measured by the number of service hours performed over 12 months. UNCP will honor students who participate in community service with Presidential Awards at an annual event and with special distinction at graduation, said Director Aubrey Swett (Center for Leadership & Service). “We are extremely proud to recognize our most outstanding volunteers with the President’s Volunteer Service Award,” Swett said. “UNCP volunteers are role models in our community, donating their time, energy and talent to bring us closer together as neighbors and a nation. The award is our way of thanking these volunteers and inspiring everyone in our community to make volunteering a central part of their lives."

Next Week The Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) Promotes Service During Primetime

During the week of October 19, more than 90 primetime programs will highlight volunteering during iParticipate, a national initiative of the Entertainment Industry Foundation to shine the spotlight on the ways that everyday Americans help their neighbors. Television shows on the 4 major networks (ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC) and several cable channels are incorporating themes of service and volunteering into their scripts and story lines.

Make the pitch...

    • Across the country, the local affiliates of the four broadcast networks will be looking for volunteer stories to highlight on their newscasts.
    • This is a great time to reach out to your local affiliates with stories and statistics about your volunteering and service program — talk shows, morning shows, and evening news. Print media may also be more receptive.
    • Collect stories about what volunteers have done for your organization.
    • For a media toolkit with tips and sample materials, visit: http://www.serve.gov/spread.asp

UCLA students Blanket City for Nation's Largest-Ever University-Organized Volunteer Day

Excerpts from article by Alison Hewitt:

An army of 4,300 UCLA freshmen and transfer students, the size of a NATO brigade, fanned out across Los Angeles on Tuesday, September 22 to make the city a better place. For UCLA's first Volunteer Day, nearly 1,000 students began trail repair at Griffith Park, 1,000 more tackled beach clean-up at Point Dume in Malibu, and about 500 each beautified the Veterans Affairs hospital in West Los Angeles and five Los Angeles Unified School District campuses.

UCLA Chancellor Gene Block, who has made volunteerism a priority since taking the reins in 2007, was joined by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa at Gompers Middle School in South Los Angeles to applaud the 600 Bruins blanketing the campus. They scurried across the asphalt, repainting basketball court outlines and giving buildings a new coat of paint. (Watch the video)

All together, the 4,300 students, joined by 300 staff, faculty, alumni and older undergraduates who served as task captains, slathered on 555 gallons of paint, planted dozens of trees at schools, restored trails at Griffith Park, rebuilt fences at Point Dume and more. Across the 26 different work sites, the people who care for the campuses and parks on a daily basis told the students how much the work meant.

Volunteer Day was organized in partnership with L.A. Works, a volunteer action center that links volunteers to service opportunities, and sponsored by the Entertainment Industry Foundation, Hollywood's leading charitable organization, which provided a $250,000 grant. UCLA's new Volunteer Center, which officially launched just 24 hours before Volunteer Day, is funded by The UCLA Foundation.

Photos and tweets about Volunteer Day poured in from students, staff and faculty all morning, making hundreds of details available on Twitter at #uclavol and creating an ever-growing Flickr photo page and an interactive photo-map.

Two Charities are Seeking University Teams to Help Develop and Implement "Earth Kiva"

Earth Kiva, information about which is at www.globalgreenlabs.org/ese.htm, is seeking to lend, invest or donate to accelerate a public transition to green living. Students, be they graduate or undergraduate, could have a number of experiences within the context of service-learning, depending on what faculty wished:  social entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship, business planning, marketing, Internet marketing, television marketing, radio marketing, journalism, public relations, consumer behavior, management, customer relations, accounting, micro-financing, environmental studies, corporate law, nonprofit law, international law, language practice, intercultural business practices, cultural anthropology, international development, sustainable development, Web design, coding for Web functionality, and perhaps others. Faculty or staff looking for a project which could considerably increase their institution's network and interaction around the world, but which could be divided so that there be "semester milestones", might find Earth Kiva of value.  Notably, in phase two, Earth Kiva would establish chapters on other campuses, and each such chapter would provide service-learning opportunities for students.
