Next Facilitated Discussion December 4!

We are pleased to host our next NC Campus Compact Facilitated Discussion on Tuesday, December 4,    10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Elon University.  "Preparing to facilitate public dialogues: Encouraging community voice” focuses on  furthering community engagement with the campus.  But what if we don't like what we hear if we try to listen to the community? What if controversial topics or attitudes surface?  How do we ensure that student learning is enhanced as community and campus intersect? How do we interpret what is happening in our community? How does our office "spin" the negative stories that the community hears about us?

Margaret Henderson, Associate Director of the Public Intersection Project at UNC-Chapel Hill will be our facilitator for this challenging and interesting topic.  Henderson joined UNC Chapel Hill’s School of Government in 1999. In her role with the Public Intersection Project, she researches and communicates strategies that strengthen cross-sector working relationships for more effective public problem-solving. In facilitation work, she specializes in the practical implications of managing cross-organizational collaborations, community programs, and nonprofit organizations. Henderson’s 20 years of experience in human services includes work in state and local governments as well as nonprofits. Previously she was executive director of the Orange County Rape Crisis Center. Her current responsibilities include teaching in the School’s MPA Program, and she has co-authored articles that were published in Popular Government, ICMA's IQ Report and PM Magazine, American Review of Public Administration, PA Times, and the FBI Law Enforcement Journal. Henderson holds a BBA in business administration from Angelo State University and an MPA from UNC-Chapel Hill.

To learn more about the work of the Public Intersection Project, go to their web site: http://www.publicintersection.unc.edu/index.html.

We hope you will join us for this stimulating conversation.  As always, you are encouraged to invite others from your campus that you think will benefit from and enjoy the topic.  Please RSVP with the number from your campus to Rosa at rsmith29@elon.edu by November 28.  This facilitated discussion and lunch are provided by a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro.

Campus Compact Annual Survey Is Now Available

It’s time again for our members to complete the annual Campus Compact survey. Is it critical that as many members as possible respond to provide a broad perspective of Campus Compact activities.  In recent years, this annual survey data has been picked up by news outlets and is consistently referenced. If at least 50% of state members respond, the national office will provide us with a report detailing our state's data compared to the national data.  The deadline is Friday, December 7

Recent Study Shows College Students are Politically Charged and Socially Aware

A recently study by Alloy College Explorer finds that current college students (18-30 years of age) are “heading back to campus in record numbers with mounting concern surrounding the state of the union and the future of their country.” The report finds that 94% of respondents are planning to vote in the 2008 Presidential Election. The study also showed that college students feel that “people their age” have what it takes to impact positive world change, more so than the US Government and Fortune 500 Companies.
