2009 Civic Engagement Institute - Team Leader Names Needed Immediately!

February 10, 2009, is a campus-members only Civic Engagement Institute (followed the next day by PACE, the former Service-Learning Conference).  Each campus’ president or chancellor was invited to identify a team leader for the Institute, who would be responsible for creating a 3-10 person group to attend.  The Institute will empower campus teams to review and assess current access and success initiatives on their campuses, challenging them to build civic engagement initiatives that contribute to first generation and minority students completing at their institutions.

To date we have not received notice of participation from these campuses:  Brevard, ECU, Greensboro College, High Point, Johnson C. Smith, Lees-McRae, Lenoir-Rhyne, NC A&T, Peace, Pfeiffer, St. Andrews, Stanly CC, UNC-Asheville, Wake Forest and Wingate.  We would like to include ALL member institutions for this important Institute.  This link will take you to a schedule for the day.  We are pleased to welcome Mr. Wayne Meisel from the Bonner Foundation as one of three keynote speakers.

If your campus has not yet responded, will YOU please take the lead in having a team leader identified, one who will take advantage of this opportunity to involve multiple folks from your campus in thinking deeply about how to enhance (or increase) first generation and minority success on your campus, particularly as we work to recruit more to attend.  If you have any questions, contact Leslie Garvin, lgarvin@elon.edu, or Lisa Keyne, lkeyne@elon.edu.

VISTA Slots Available for Spring Semester 2009

NC Campus Compact is pleased to announce 4 AmeriCorps*VISTA slots available for February 2009. In fall 2008 we had the largest number of VISTA applicants ever, however we are unsure of the number of slots that will be available in the summer of 2009. We highly encourage schools that are interested in the benefits of having an AmeriCorps*VISTA on their campus to apply.  Please contact Jonathan Romm, jromm@elon.edu, with your questions.

2008 Annual National Campus Compact Membership Survey Now Open

Campus Compact’s Annual Membership Survey is now available for completion online at http://www.compact.org. The deadline to complete the survey is January 23, 2009.   Please note that this is not the same state-based survey that NC Campus Compact conducts each spring.  This is the most comprehensive and widely distributed survey of service, service-learning, and civic engagement in higher education. Results allow campuses to compare their progress with state and national trends and help national Campus Compact make a case for campus-based initiatives among legislators, funders, and the public. Complete survey results will be posted on the national website in the spring of 2009. You can view last year’s results at http://www.compact.org/about/statistics/.

Register Today for the 2009 P.A.C.E. Conference (formerly the Service-Learning Conference)!

We invite faculty, scholars, administrators, community partners and students who are involved in civic engagement research, instruction and practice to attend this conference. Highlights include over 30 workshops, keynote address by Jamie P. Merisotis, president and chief executive officer of the Lumina Foundation for Education and presentation of the 2009 Robert L. Sigmon Award (nominations open on December 5) to an individual (faculty or staff) who has made significant contributions toward furthering the practice of service-learning.

This annual conference provides participants with valuable information and skills they can utilize in their civic engagement work.  Last year nearly 250 faculty, staff, students and community partners representing 49 universities in five states attended;

National Summit on Measuring the Impacts of Project-Based Service Learning (PBSL) on Engineering Education, February 19-20, 2009, Washington, DC

Call for Participants

This summit is seeking applicants who are interested in participating in a 2-day summit being organized by Kurt Paterson, Michigan Tech; Chris Swan, Tufts University; Angela Bielefeldt, University of Colorado at Boulder. The Summit is being supported by the National Science Foundation, and therefore travel expenses to attend the summit will be paid by the NSF grant.

The goal of this Summit is to identify the impacts that project-based service learning is having on engineering education. Approximately ten leaders in the implementation of PBSL programs and ten assessment experts will be invited to attend the Summit to contribute to this goal. Specific objectives include:

  1. An examination of project-based service learning program participation demographics, trends, and outcomes; comparison of international and domestic PBSL; comparison to project-based programs without service learning; comparison between similar programs
  2. Identification of assessment needs for PBSL programs
  3. Identification of assessment strategies capable of revealing outcomes of interest for project-based service learning programs
  4. Feedback to the National Science Foundation regarding effective assessment strategies for project-based service learning programs, as well as elements critical to the success of these programs that could be infused into traditional engineering programs

The format will be an active one with a mix of sharing, brainstorming, and learning among participants. Participants will be asked to complete a few assignments over the next couple months leading up to the Summit in order to make our meeting as productive as possible.

If you are interested in participating, please send a brief CV highlighting your experiences with PBSL and/or educational assessment (2-page NSF format preferred) and a 1-page letter summarizing your interest in participating. Forward this information to: Kurt Paterson (paterson@mtu.edu) at your earliest convenience, but no later than December 5, 2008.
