DECEMBER
Society for Research into Higher Education Annual Conference 2008
"Valuing Higher Education"
December 9-11, 2008, Liverpool, UK NEW!
Today, economic values can seem to dominate higher education: throughout the world, governments seek to develop their higher education systems to improve national competitiveness in an increasingly globalised market place. Individuals, too, may have economic reasons for seeking higher education. Yet economic values are not the sole drivers: moral, social, philosophical and educational values are all central to the debate.
This conference will address the following questions:
- How is higher education valued by different stakeholder groups, such as parents, students, academics, government, the private sector?
- Are there value clashes in the purposes of higher education?
- How is the value of higher education perceived in different societies, by different generations?
- What kinds of values do academic leaders/managers hold and why?
- How is value measured in higher education?
- What value do students place on their higher education experience & how do they evaluate it?
For full information visit the Conference website at: http://www.srhe.ac.uk/conference2008.

2009 Greater Expectations Institute: Campus Leadership for Student Engagement,
Inclusion, and Achievement
June 17-21, 2009, University of Vermont, Dudley H. Davis Student Center
The Greater Expectations Institute is a five-day, intensive program designed for campuses working on ways to increase student engagement, inclusion, and high achievement. The Institute will help you align institutional purposes, structures, and practices as well as advance and assess a set of essential liberal education outcomes outlined in AAC&U’s signature reports, College Learning for the New Global Century and Greater Expectations: A New Vision for Learning as a Nation Goes to College, such as critical inquiry, intercultural competence, and integrative learning.
The Institute curriculum grows out of AAC&U’s long-standing work in diversity and educational quality, most recently brought together under a major initiative, Making Excellence Inclusive. The framework rests on two beliefs: that a high-quality, practical liberal education should be the standard of excellence for all students, and that diversity and intercultural competence are essential elements of a contemporary liberal education. AAC&U is a national resource for campuses looking to create and sustain diverse learning environments; the Institute focuses on developing the collaborative leadership needed to do so.
