Obama Administration Launches United We Serve
First Lady Michelle Obama and Cabinet secretaries fanned out across the country last week to participate in community service projects as part of the launch of United We Serve, a national call to service by President Obama. Mrs. Obama kicked off United We Serve by joining California First Lady Maria Shriver and volunteers in helping build a public playground at an elementary school in San Francisco.

In a video message, Mrs. Obama stressed the importance of service in her own life and urged Americans to go to Serve.gov to find local volunteer opportunities. "This summer, the President and I are asking you to make time and do your part...Wherever your interests lie - whether it's working with young people or caring for the sick and elderly in our hospitals, or helping to make the homes in your neighborhood more energy efficient - or any other issue, the most important thing is for you to get involved."
More than a dozen Cabinet members participated in projects and reinforced the President's call to service. HUD Secretary Donovan joined AmeriCorps members in rebuilding a New Orleans home destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Interior Secretary Salazar helped remove exotic plants from Shenandoah National Park. Commerce Secretary Locke read to homeless children at a homeless shelter in Mesa Arizona. In Los Angeles, Labor Secretary Solis helped construct energy-efficient housing for low-income individuals. (For a full list, click here.)
On Monday, June 22, Mrs. Obama addressed more than 4,500 nonprofit, volunteer, and service leaders at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service (including NC Campus Compact's Leslie Garvin). Other speakers at the opening session included House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, California First Lady Maria Shriver, and Jon Bon Jovi and Matthew McConaughey, representing the Entertainment Industry Foundation.
Summer Associates VISTA Program Launched
This summer NC Campus Compact is working with Elon University, UNC-Greensboro, and Wake Forest University in a pilot Summer Associate (SA) Americorps*VISTA program that offers first generation, rising sophomore college students an opportunity to serve on campuses, particularly within their programs and summer offerings that target disadvantaged youth and first generation students.
Programs these 12 Summer Associates are working with include: Wake Forest’s Campus Kitchen Project, UNC-G’s Summer Launch, and Elon’s Pre-SERVE. Summer Associates are also attending weekly professional developments which include: financial management, interview lunch skills and etiquette, service projects, and MBTI and Strong Inventory facilitations.
The Summer Associate Program runs from June 1st to July 31st and is an excellent way for campuses to bolster their human resource capacity as well as provide professional and service experience to college students. If you are interested in hosting a Summer Associate Program on you campus next year or have any question, please contact Jonathan Romm at jromm@elon.edu, or 336.278.7197.
