Inaugural Summer Associates VISTA Program A Huge Success!
This summer NC Campus Compact worked with Elon University, UNC-Greensboro, and Wake Forest University in a pilot Summer Associate (SA) AmeriCorps*VISTA program that offered first-generation college students an opportunity to serve on campuses, particularly within their programs and summer offerings that target disadvantaged youth and first generation students. Funding for this initiative was provided by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Programs these 12 Summer Associates worked with include: Wake Forest’s Campus Kitchen Project, UNC-G’s Summer Launch, and Elon’s Pre-SERVE. Summer Associates also attended weekly professional developments which included: financial management, interview lunch skills and etiquette, service projects, and MBTI and Strong Inventory facilitations. On their campus and in their community each North Carolina Campus Compact Summer Associates facilitated an average of 343 volunteer hours through the generation or support of 29.5 volunteers each month.
The Summer Associate Program ran from June 1st to July 31st and was an excellent way for campuses to bolster their human resource capacity as well as provide professional and service experience to college students. If you are interested in hosting a 2010 Summer Associate Program on you campus next year or have any questions, please contact Jonathan Romm at jromm@elon.edu, or 336.278.7197.

$9.3 million Contributed to UNC Charlotte for Leadership Citizenship Scholarship
The Leon Levine Foundation is funding the largest individual gift commitment in UNC Charlotte’s history, establishing a major new merit scholarship program – the Levine Scholars Program – that will enable the school to recruit exceptional student-leaders from around the United States.
Starting in the spring of 2010, 15 high school seniors from throughout the country will be selected annually to receive the Levine Scholarship. Levine Scholars will receive funding to cover all tuition and fees, housing and meals, books, a laptop computer, summer experiences, and a grant to support their community service work while undergraduates at UNC Charlotte.

UNC School of Law Receives National Accolades for Pro Bono Work
The University of North Carolina School of Law was ranked ninth nationally by preLaw magazine because of its clinical and pro bono programs, loan assistance programs and the percentage of graduates who pursue public interest. The school also was named Pro Bono Law School of the Year by the Pro Bono Project for its continued efforts to help individuals in New Orleans who are still facing complex legal issues.
The school dedicated an additional $200,000 to help mitigate student exposure to a difficult job market. UNC also launched its loan repayment assistance program in March for graduates with law school debt working in public interest.

New Guide Helps Members Navigate the College Cost Reduction and Access Act
Campus Compact has created an in-depth guide to a law passed to increase access to college and make it easier to repay student loans, particularly for those going into public service jobs.
Because many pieces of the College Cost Reduction and Access Act just became active, students, financial aid officers, and others are largely unaware of its significant financial benefits. It is because of this that Campus Compact created this guide to help members navigate the details of this complex law and help students get the most out of the new loan forgiveness plans.

Learn and Serve America Announces $20 Million in Service-Learning Grants
The Corporation for National and Community Service recently announced 36 Learn and Serve America grants totaling nearly $20 million to engage students across the nation in service-learning projects that promote community service while enhancing students' academic and civic skills. The grants will support service-learning at schools, institutions of higher education, tribes, and faith-based and community groups.
Higher Education Grants
Approximately $9.27 million will be awarded to 18 individual colleges or statewide or national consortia. These grants help colleges fulfill their civic mission by supporting the development of courses, extracurricular programs, and faculty research designed to meet community needs and carry out partnerships with their surrounding communities. In addition, many projects enable universities to employ Federal Work-Study students in community-serving roles. The only North Carolina higher education institution to receive a grant is Fayetteville State University with a $465,378 grant for 3 years. For a complete list of grants, click here.

Civic Engagement Program Reviewer Sought
Wartburg College, a selective liberal arts college of the Lutheran church (ELCA) in Waverly, Iowa is looking to enrich its work in the area of civic engagement by inviting an outside assessor to review and comment on their Center for Community Engagement (CCE). The CCE was founded in 2005 to coordinate or assist with a variety of community engagement projects, including internships, practica, service-learning, co-curricular service, K-12 school partnerships, and community-based research. Establishment of the CCE was made possible, in part, by a grant from the Lilly Endowment’s Program for the Theological Exploration of Vocation. The College seeks those with professional experience in the areas of civic engagement and experiential education to review and assess the CCE and comment on its service to the institution’s mission and goals. Ideally, the assessment and report would be completed no later than January 2010.
Please contact Daniel R. Kittle, Ph.D., Director, Center for Community Engagement if you are interested at (319) 352-8701 or daniel.kittle@wartburg.edu
