This individual will work towards the following goals and objectives:

Goal A:   Facilitate the success of each informal and formal Neighborhood or Homeowner's Association (35%)

Objective: Provide training and support such that families develop leadership skills and are able to take over entire duties of HOA and community direction with little administrative support.

The director of programs reports to the executive director and is responsible for the Council's programs.

Duties include:
(1) Oversee and facilitate the development, implementation and coordination of all programs conducted or contracted by the Council and ensure that they meet Council strategic goals and objectives; (2) Coordinate and manage program staff to achieve Council strategic goals and objectives; (3) Oversee grants program and participate in the development of guidelines, counseling of applicants, review of proposals, and monitoring of funded projects; (4) Facilitate development and implementation of programmatic outreach strategy; (5) Establish and maintain relationships with partner organizations; (6) Work with staff to advance public relations, fundraising and organizational performance; (7) Such duties as may be assigned by the executive director.

AmeriCorps NCCC NEW!

AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), a residential national service program, is seeking idealistic, community-minded individuals, to join the corps. NCCC teams spend 10-months responding to needs that are identified by local and national nonprofit organizations and government agencies. Based at one of NCCC's five regional campuses - located in California, Colorado, Iowa, Maryland, and Mississippi - members travel the country full time with other young men and women, tutor at-risk children, build homes for low-income families, assist victims of Hurricane Katrina, and help local communities meet a range of critical needs. All NCCC members receive lodging, meals, health benefits, student loan deferment, a living allowance, and nearly $5,000 to help pay for school... not to mention the experience of a lifetime.

AmeriCorps Retention Project Coordinator, Washington Campus Compact, University of Washington Bothell NEW!

Volunteer Coordinator/Liaison, Unite For Sight and Technolutions Corporation

Unite for Site a global eye health 501(c)(3) non-profit, and Technolutions Corporation, an information management software company servicing colleges and universities, seek talented applicants interested in applying liberal arts skills to this diverse full-time position.  Both organizations are headquartered in downtown New Haven.  This unique opportunity enables you to sample simultaneously the corporate and non-profit sectors from your office overlooking the Yale campus. 

With Unite For Sight, you will act as a volunteer coordinator, managing the relationships with 50 college chapters and with the 250 students traveling abroad every year.  You will work directly with the founder and C.E.O. to expand and enhance the organization's programs.

AmeriCorps Program Manager, Rebuilding Together CapacityCorps, Washington, DC

The selected candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day AmeriCorps program operations and member management of a brand new AmeriCorps*National Direct program – the Rebuilding Together CapacityCorps-  located in 26 Rebuilding Together affiliates in 16 states. The Rebuilding Together CapacityCorps Program Manager is a full-time position reporting to the Director of National Service Programs in the Affiliate Relations Department, located in Dupont Circle in Washington D.C. AmeriCorps Program Director, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)

LISC is a national non-profit intermediary that provides financial and technical assistance to community-based organizations, public agencies and private (for-profit) entities focused on the redevelopment of urban neighborhoods and rural communities.  The organization works in metropolitan areas throughout the nation to assist its various partners in the development of affordable multi-family and senior housing, homeownership opportunities, commercial enterprises, community facilities and various community building programs such as employment, day care, health care, open space and national service.

LISC is seeking a full-time Director to lead its effort in human capital development and CDC capacity building via its AmeriCorps program.  The position is the principal liaison with the Corporation for National and Community for all matters related to the management and administration of the grant.  The Program Director also works closely with LISC policy staff to provide educational materials to Congress relative to funding for AmeriCorps and other National Service programs, and with External Affairs Staff (Communications & Development) to assist with fundraising and communications efforts.

The position oversees the LISC AmeriCorps program nationally; supervises the development and implementation of national and local orientations; provides support and technical assistance to the field, and implements policies and procedures needed to insure that the program remains compliant with the terms and conditions of the AmeriCorps grant. 

The Program Director reports to the Senior Vice President for Field Strategies, supervises a staff of two and is responsible for managing relationships with the field offices that manage AmeriCorps programs locally and CDCs who host AmeriCorps members.  The position is based in LISC's national headquarters in New York City.  Frequent travel is required.

The LISC program introduces AmeriCorps members to careers in the community development profession, and trains participants to be neighborhood leaders by providing skills in community-based development.  The program partners with  Community Development Corporations (CDCs) to generate productive assignments that produce tangible improvements in the quality of life in inner city neighborhoods. 

Currently the LISC AmeriCorps program, through its field offices in Chicago, Houston, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, Michigan, Providence, San Diego, the San Francisco Bay area and South Florida expects to place 150 full and part-time members with CDCs .

Habitat for Humanity in FL, AL, MS, SC, NC, VA, DE, MD, KY, and TN NEW!

 

VISTA volunteers will help organize the systems needed to construct homes more efficiently and to make full use of the volunteer help that is available locally. They will help to locate and obtain local resources, both monetary and in-kind. They will also assist in improving community knowledge and involvement in Habitat throughout the state. The major goal is the implementing of systems and the training of volunteers to administer those systems. Some tasks include: Improving coordination of volunteers serving in Habitat activities, expanding public knowledge of Habitat for Humanity, and assisting local board in implementation of administrative systems.

 

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.

Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) NEW!


The Wisconsin DPI seeks to close the achievement gap and to help all children succeed in our schools by involving parents and the community at large in the educational process. One way the DPI is going about this is through our VISTA program. Our VISTAs facilitate and enhance school partnerships with their communities by developing and implementing effective partnership practices.

This isn't really a cookie-cutter program, so what you will actually doing looks different at every site, but some examples of the work you could do as a VISTA follow:

 

* Help develop staff and parent development workshops.

* Help establish an effective and comprehensive communication system for the school community.

* Help families understand school structure and to feel welcome in the school.

* Coordinate the recruitment and training of tutors and/or mentors.

* Help in offering learning activities and events for the whole family.

* Include parents and other community members in facilitating children's learning outside of school activities.

* Recruit families and other community members to volunteer in school events, after school, and tutoring programs.

* Encourage parents to participate in school activities, including attending school board and site council meetings.

* Involve local service groups in the school.

* Promote school partnership efforts through various media, such as local newspapers, radio stations, or community bulletin boards.

* Write grant proposals to support partnership activities.

Miami Dade College Earth Ethics Institute NEW!

Louisiana Campus Compact NEW!

(LaCC) currently has six (6) VISTA positions available designed to service-learning and civic engagement activities at LaCC member campuses.

AmeriCorps*VISTAs will:

•Coordinate and support the work of campus wide service-learning and civic engagement activities.

Business District Revitalization Coordinator, Washington Campus Compact NEW!

This job is for a full-time VISTA position with Eastern Washington University to support Community Based Revitalization efforts in two Inner City Commercial Districts in the East Central Neighborhood.  Funded through the Washington Campus Compact, the person hired will work with EWU and Neighborhood Groups, Business Associations, and the City of Spokane’s Neighborhood Business Center program to coordinate and implement selected revitalization activities of business districts within the East Central Neighborhood.

Duties of Business District Revitalization Coordinator

1 Actively support and coordinate implementation of business district action plans under the guidance of  EWU planning faculty and  with support from the business associations and the City’s NBC program;

2.  Attend association meetings and provide staff support and coordination with EWU’s BRC Community Based Revitalization Program.

3. Build and strengthen existing and new relations between EWU faculty and staff and the East Central neighborhood business associations, including:

a) plan, implement and support special events and activities which engage EWU faculty, staff and students in neighborhood activities;

b) support on-going planning, business development and related economic revitalization activities;

c) provide direct support and assistance to business association initiatives

4. Support business association efforts to seek outside funding and support for district projects and initiatives.

Tompkins Community Action, New York NEW!

Five AmeriCorps*VISTA members wantedto work on specific projects within each of the Agency's four departments: Early Childhood, Energy Services, Family Resources and Housing. These departments operate over 20 diverse programs and projects, all of which share a common goal: to stimulate community efforts and policy that will assist families and individuals in building resources to become economically self-sufficient.

1. Early Childhood Primary School Family Support Program (PSFSP)-The goal of the PSFSP VISTA project is to expand the Primary School Family Support Program (PSFSP) to serve an additional 20 students and their families in partnership with a currently unserved Tompkins County school district by the 2009-2010 school year.

  

The AmeriCorps*VISTA member will research funding and collaborative opportunities, assist in writing funding applications, create a program evaluation and reporting tool, create a PSFSP training manual and training program for family advocates and school administration who work in and with the program and create outreach materials to promote the PSFSP.

2. Energy Services Healthy Homes Project (HHP)-The goal of the Healthy Homes VISTA Project is to ensure the long term sustainability of the HHP through strong support systems and funding.

The VISTA member will research funding opportunities and assist in writing grant applications, assist in the recruitment of volunteers and coordinate environmental mitigation training, create a Healthy Homes newsletter, develop outreach materials for families and create a program evaluation tool.

3. Housing Services Family Self Sufficiency Program-The goal of the Family Self Sufficiency Program is to assist participating families to get off public welfare, gain a healthy interdependence with their community and to establish services to assist participants in building financial stability and accumulate wealth.

The VISTA member will develop and implement program evaluation and reporting tools, research best practices in the area of new financial tools and research funding opportunities and assist in the writing of applications to those identified funding sources for training monies and other program activities.

4. Family Resources Circles Family Project-The Family Resources Department plans to initiate a Circles Project; continuing the work of our previous one year VISTA member. By developing social networks and massing community resources, low-income families, in our Circles program, will build new support systems through healthy relationships with community members, gain access to and use a broad range of resources that will assist them on their paths out of poverty.

  

The VISTA member will research funding opportunities and assist in writing grant applications for the Circles training, develop an orientation program for families, develop a family contract of participation and logs of contact and develop recruitment strategies and materials.

5. Family Resources Circle Allies Project-The goal of the Circles Allies VISTA Project is to ensure that strong support systems are in place for the long term sustainability of the project.

The VISTA member will research funding opportunities for the Circles training, develop a contract of ally participation and logs of contact, develop recruitment strategies and materials and develop a training program for allies.

Access Housing Marketing/Outreach, Austin, TX NEW!

This VISTA project empowers people with disabilities to achieve economic independence and overcome housing barriers by securing accessible, affordable, and integrated housing for all people.   The Access Housing VISTA project is hosted by United Cerebral Palsy of Texas (UCP Texas).

The VISTA will work with the VISTA team, UCP staff, and the community to spread the word about the Access Housing initiatives, volunteer opportunities, and affordable accessible housing activities.  Responsibilities include:

  • Use Graphic design skills to create brochures and marketing materials for outreach to people with disabilities.
  • Assist with development of online housing resource for people with disabilities
  • Develop marketing plan for launch and continued outreach surrounding online housing resource for people with disabilities
  • Build partnerships with housing providers and advocates to expand opportunities for housing availability and accessibility.    
  • Oversee branding of UCP Texas national service programs.
  • Support Access Housing Project statewide in sharing best practices for marketing the program.
  • Utilize web-based technology to post lists of available, accessible, affordable housing units for people with disabilities.
  • Assist with or support the development of initiatives, grant requests and fund-raising activities to achieve support and continuation of the local projects.

Start date:

Pre-service orientation (a required training workshop for all AmeriCorps*VISTAs) is August 12-15, and in-office work will begin August 18th.

The Citizen Scholar Fellows, Minnesota Campus Compact NEW!

This full-time AmeriCorps VISTA for a one-year commitment begins August 4, 2008. The VISTA will work with a dynamic team and lead The Citizen Scholar Fellows. Conceptualized as an AmeriCorps scholarship, the program offers historically under served students in higher education a chance to become involved in the community, a mentor to guide them, and relevance for their course work.

The VISTA will be supervise and support the growth of this program at a statewide level while documenting, disseminating, and producing multiple media to convey the efforts of each Citizen Scholar campus. The VISTA will also aid in the documentation of other promising practices from member campuses which are related to the retention of low-income students via civic engagement and outreach to communities of underrepresented students.

Additional Duties: Support Campus Coordinators of the Citizen Scholars program, including monthly calls, site visits, and training; Record the stories of the Citizen Scholar Fellows and help publicize the results; Recruit new member campuses; Help edit, draft, and format the monthly newsletter; and support the Minnesota Campus Compact staff in additional tasks as needed.

Project SHINE, Program Coordinator

Project Shine, a collaboration between Metropolitan State University and Minneapolis Community and Technical College,  links students with immigrants and refugees seeking to learn English and navigate the complex path to U.S. citizenship. In community centers throughout Minneapolis and Saint Paul, students tutor elders in English, helping them become more actively engaged in their communities and teaching the U.S. history and civics needed to pass the citizenship exam. Project SHINE began at Temple University in Philadelphia in 1997 in response to legislation that jeopardized the public benefits of legally immigrated non-citizens. Today, SHINE is operating at twenty colleges and universities in nine urban centers across the nation.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)

Students, particularly those in areas of high poverty and minority enrollments, are not taking challenging school courses in math and science, many never complete high school. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a national, non-profit organization that uses age-appropriate robotics activities and competitions to excite students about science, math, technology, and engineering with a long-term goal of encouraging and inspiring them to pursue careers in those fields. VISTA volunteers with FIRST will: 1) assist in recruitment of teams, mentors, and volunteers, with emphasis on low-income and minority students and volunteers, 2) raise funds for teams, especially those in low-income areas, and for regional competitions, 3) assist in organizing regional competitions for all FIRST programs, 4) support, recruit, and train FIRST volunteers, and 5) secure on-going participation of teams, particularly those who face disadvantaged circumstances.

Member Duties: Activities include development of a list of possible sponsors and other funding sources and a plan for meeting with potential sponsors; presentation and promotion of FIRST to potential sponsors; communication with teams to determine needs; regular meetings with the Regional Director (RD) and assistance for planning activities (does not include regular administrative support, but may require some administrative work); presentation and promotion of FIRST to community groups, such as: Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary Clubs, youth groups, PTAs, and economic and workforce development boards; in collaboration with the RD, promotion of FIRST to legislative, academic, and public groups, community-based organizations, legislative education committees, & governor's offices; recruitment of professional mentors and students to teams through various media such as corporate intranets, school papers and publications, posters, newspapers, and TV/radio interviews.

PeaceJam, William Woods University, Fulton, MO

This position focuses on outreach and program support for the PeaceJam program (www.peacejam.org) with a special concentration on recruiting leaders of high school aged students in the St. Louis area to participate in the PeaceJam Ambassadors program with 12 Nobel Peace Laureates.  This position is part of a national VISTA project coordinated by the PeaceJam Foundation in Colorado.

The Refugee Support Network (RSN), VISTA Leader, Seattle, WA

(RSN) is a newly formed coalition of refugee service providers in the Seattle/King County region with the International Rescue Committee as lead agency. The RSN Team Leader position provides an opportunity for an experienced VISTA member to provide leadership, support and training for the eight VISTA members placed in refugee service organizations in King County.  The Refugee Support Network is a VISTA project whose goal is to enhance capacity and service quality for these participating agencies. 

The leader will provide ongoing support and problem-solving for all eight members at their sites as well as through regular team meetings and trainings. The VISTA leader will be based at the International Rescue Committee Seattle and will travel to the other RSN VISTA sites on a regular basis. The leader should have previous VISTA and supervisory experience, project coordination skills, and strong cross-cultural and organizational skills.
