Director of the Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning, University of Michigan

The University of Michigan invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning.  The University of Michigan is one of the world’s leading public research universities serving a diverse population of 41,000 students of which over 26,000 are undergraduates, who come from throughout the United States and over 80 foreign countries.  University of Michigan is home to 19 schools and colleges offering top-ranked academic programs and diverse cultural and social opportunities in a stimulating intellectual environment.  The University is well known for its commitment to public engagement and has a myriad of community-based research projects that are national models. 

The Director of the Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning provides vision and strategic leadership in partnership with the Faculty Director for the Ginsberg Center. The Center serves all undergraduate and graduate students and collaborates with faculty, staff, and external constituents.  The Director ensures that the organization proactively executes its mission of working across all parts of campus to promote faculty, students, and community partners to learn together through community service and civic participation in a diverse democracy.  In addition, the Director has overall responsibility for planning, organizing, developing, administering, evaluating, and budgeting for the Ginsberg Center. The Director reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and leads and manages 13 FTE staff (17 individuals) and numerous students. 

The successful candidate is required to have significant, increasingly responsible experiences in leadership, management, and administration, preferably in a large, complex, decentralized institution; broad–based study of student learning and development, social identity, community-based learning and engaged scholarship; and a terminal degree in higher education administration, student affairs, non-profit/public management, or related field. 

The Director of the Ginsberg Center Search Advisory Committee is being assisted in the search by Greenwood/Asher & Associates, Inc.

Habitat for Humanity, AmeriCorps Members

9 construction crew leader positions, Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Frederick counties

 

The goal of the MD Habitat AmeriCorps program is to help Maryland affiliates run more efficiently and effectively, to maximize their existing volunteers, increase their capacity for new volunteers, and most importantly to meet the housing needs of the communities by building more houses for low-income families. Members will receive initial and ongoing training, support from their affiliate, and will have the opportunity to participate in special events, such as a self designed Community Service Project, Build-A-Thon, and MLK day.

In addition to the positive experience, the program provides many member benefits. Members receive a modest bi-weekly living allowance, a $4,725 Education Award following the successful completion of their 11 month term, Health Insurance, Workers Comp Insurance, and Child Care Assistance free of charge. During the program, qualified student loan(s) may be put into forbearance for a member. Many affiliates provide members with some form of housing assistance. All members will work to complete 1700 service hours from August 2008 to July 2009. The program also offers many invaluable benefits such as leadership, verbal and written communication, service, construction, social work experience and people skills.
