2008-2009 VISTA Host Site Applications Now Available!
Would you like a VISTA to work on program development and sustainability efforts for service at your campus for the 2008-2009 academic year? Now is the time to start planning to apply! The 2008-2009 VISTA Host Site applications will be distributed at the NC Campus Compact regional meetings in January. They are also available on the VISTA section of the website at this link. The applicaiton deadline is February 15, 2008. If you have any questions please contact Kristen Carter at kcarter12@elon.edu.
Please note: While the application process will be very similar to last year, there will be some additional expectations for 2008-09 host sites, as well as some slight changes to the application form. Most notably, there will be two different cost share levels, depending on the number of years your campus has hosted a VISTA: For campuses who will only be in their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year hosting a VISTA in ’08-‘09, there will be an administrative fee of $1,500. For campuses going into their fourth year and beyond, the VISTA administrative fee is now $2,000.

While designed for newer member campuses, all member campuses can join in this stimulating day. This link will take you to a detailed agenda. Please RSVP by March 1, 2008 to Lisa (lkeyne@elon.edu) with the number planning to attend from your campus.

Application Process Open for 2008 Carnegie "Community Engagement" Classification
In 2006 the Carnegie Foundation introduced the first "elective" classification of colleges and universities, focused on community engagement. Although they intend ultimately to bring the new classification onto the same update schedule as their other classifications, they will be repeating the community engagement classification process in 2008. Institutions currently included in the Community Engagement classification will retain their present classification. The 2008 process is to accommodate new participants. The Call for Participation is available at http://www.carnegiefoundation.org/classifications/sub.asp?key=1213&subkey=2215
Campus Compact Launches Campus Vote Initiative
As part of Campus Compact’s 2008 Campus Vote Initiative, we’ve launched a new website to encourage students to take part in the upcoming elections. The site features voter registration and education resources, ways to connect service with civic engagement, strategies for encouraging democratic participation, and model campus programs. The site also offers hands-on tools and templates for students, faculty, and community service staff as well as information on other nonpartisan democracy initiatives.

“Educating Students for Civic Engagement” Online Course (February 11 –29, 2008)
Join Dr. Barbara Jacoby for this three-week online course to learn about how student affairs professionals can educate students to become citizens, scholars, and leaders in their professions, their communities, the nation and the world. Both champions and critics of higher education are demanding that colleges and universities get serious about educating future generations of citizens who are committed to tackling society’s most pressing issues. Participants in this course will gain: understanding of what is civic engagement and why it is central to a college education; knowledge of the state-of-the-art developmental models and program examples; and access to resources for designing programs to achieve desired student learning outcomes.
To register and for the full course description visit http://www.myacpa.org/pd/e-Learning/.

Apply to Participate in the Community-Engaged Scholarship Faculty Development Charette at UNC-Chapel Hill
Faculty for the Engaged Campus is seeking teams from 20 diverse colleges and universities across the U.S. to participate in a Community-Engaged Scholarship Faculty Development Charrette (May 28-30, 2008, the Rizzo Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) to facilitate development of innovative campus-wide mechanisms for preparing and supporting community-engaged faculty. If your institution is committed to furthering its investment in community-engaged scholarship through effective faculty development and would benefit from a focused, collaborative learning opportunity with a cadre of like-minded others, please consider sending a team to this action-oriented gathering.
A charrette is an intensely focused multi-day session that uses a collaborative approach to create realistic and achievable designs. Charrettes have mainly been used in architecture, urban planning and community design projects. In our case, we will convene campus teams, project leadership and expert advisors to collaboratively design innovative models of CES faculty development. Teams must include a
minimum of three and a maximum of four members, with at least one of those being a senior faculty member with a proven track record of CES.
There is no registration fee for the charrette. The Rizzo Center is an all-inclusive facility (i.e., rates include all meals), and Faculty for the Engaged Campus is covering a significant portion of the costs for those attending.
Following the charrette, participating institutions will be invited to submit proposals to support the implementation and evaluation of innovative CES faculty development models developed through their team's participation in the charrette. At least four institutions will receive up to $15,000 over two years for this purpose ($10,000 in the first year and $5,000 in the second). Only institutions that send a team to the charrette are eligible to apply for these funds.
Applications are due on March 17, 2008. The Call for Applications is available at http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/pdf_files/cfa-charrette.pdf
For more information, visit the Faculty for the Engaged Campus website at http://depts.washington.edu/ccph/faculty-engaged.html or contact Deputy Director Piper McGinley at fipse2@u.washington.edu.
Faculty for the Engaged Campus is a national initiative of Community-Campus Partnerships for Health in partnership with the University of Minnesota and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that aims to strengthen community-engaged career paths in the academy by developing innovative competency-based models of faculty development, facilitating peer review and dissemination of products of community-engaged scholarship, and supporting community-engaged faculty through the promotion and tenure process.

National Service Funding Cut in New Appropriations Bill
On December 26, 2007 President Bush signed the Omnibus Appropriations Bill, which will cut funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service by 3% in Fiscal Year 2008. The Corporation houses the national service programs, including Learn and Serve America, AmeriCorps, and the Senior Corps.
