Initiative on Civic Learning and Civic Action - Research Grants

Eligibility:

Principal Investigators applying for a Research Grant must be affiliated with a school district, a college or university, a research facility, or a cultural institution. The Foundation accepts proposals from institutions and/or researchers from the U.S. and internationally. Researchers must also have an earned doctorate in an academic discipline or professional field or appropriate experience in an education-related profession.

Restrictions:

Under most circumstances, grantees may not be named as a principal investigator on two research grants simultaneously from the Spencer Foundation.

Proposal Submission Guidelines and Review Process

Once you have determined that you are eligible and have reviewed the research priorities described in the Initiative on Civic Learning and Civic Action description, please follow the guidelines provided for submitting a proposal, which vary slightly depending on the level of funding you will be requesting.

Town Creek Foundation

The Town Creek Foundation is dedicated to a sustainable environment, a strong democracy, and a peaceful world. The Foundation supports national nonprofit organizations that strengthen the environmental movement, and those that are working to reduce the pressure on forests from the paper products industry. The Foundation also encourages advocacy work devoted to protecting the public's interest in the national media system. In addition, the Foundation provides grants to organizations working within the United States to reduce the risks and costs of war. The upcoming deadline for letters of inquiry is November 21, 2008.

Monthly Student Grants from the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Foundation (JRCPF)

Each month JRCPF offers a $1000 CASE grant through the ServiceBook Monthly award. Students wishing to be considered for this award can apply via www.ServiceBook.org. As with our other CASE awards, students must register, log in, then follow the links: Students > Submit Your Project. Within the application, students must be sure to select "ServiceBook Monthly" under the "CASE Competition" drop-down list. An applicant for a CASE grant must be a full-time student, propose an innovative academic service learning project, recruit a community as a partner, enlist a faculty member to oversee the project and submit an application over ServiceBook.  Students who win the award keep a running account of project activities and write a summary report at the conclusion of the project.  In addition to the project summary student is encouraged to submit a video and photographs.

Reader's Digest Foundation: Make It Matter

The Reader's Digest Foundation is dedicated to creating opportunities and promoting efforts that encourage individuals to make a positive difference in their communities. The Make It Matter program, the Foundation's newest initiative, honors individuals who are taking action and giving back to their communities in a significant way. Each month, through 2008, Reader's Digest magazine will profile an individual who has made a significant contribution to his or her community. Considering the subject of the selected story, the Foundation will select an appropriate nonprofit organization and grant $100,000 to that organization in honor of the person featured in the story. Nominations for the Make It Matter program may be submitted online through the website listed above at any time during the next ten months. Visit the link below for more information.

Do Something Offering Weekly Grants for Young Social Entrepreneurs
Deadline: Rolling

Do Something is a not-for-profit organization that works to inspire, support, and celebrate young social entrepreneurs and community activists. The organization is accepting applications for the following grant programs:

• Do Something and GameStop are offering grants of $500 each to young people, age 25 and younger, in the United States or Canada who have a great idea for a community-action project and need support to turn their idea into reality. GameStop grants are given out weekly.
• Do Something and Plum TV are offering grants of $500 each to social entrepreneurs, age 25 and younger, in the U.S. who have recently created a sustainable project, program, or organization and need funding to further the growth  and success of their program. Plum TV grants are given out weekly.

Funds for Targeted Programs in the U.S., Canada, and the Developing World

The Arthur B. Schultz Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life on earth through support of wildlands conservation, disabled recreation and mobility, international microenterprise, and global understanding. The Foundation’s grantmaking priorities include organizations supporting outdoor adventure opportunities for the disabled in the U.S. and programs providing wheelchairs for the needy overseas. In addition, socially and environmentally responsible entrepreneurial projects in the developing world are supported. Finally, the Foundation encourages initiatives designed to promote global peace and understanding between people of different nations and ethnic backgrounds.
