Global Competition To Help Young Men Succeed
Ashoka and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation are accepting applications to fund innovative approaches to supporting young men at right between ages of 15-25 in realizing their potential and achieving success. National Education Association Foundation Offers Support for Student Learning Improvement Projects
The NEA Foundation supports a variety of efforts by teachers, education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff to improve student learning in U.S. public schools, colleges, and universities. The foundation is accepting applications for the following programs:
- Learning & Leadership Grants: Provide opportunities for teachers, education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff to engage in high-quality professional development and lead their colleagues in professional growth. The grant amount is $2,000 each for individuals and $5,000 each for groups engaged in collegial study.
- Student Achievement Grants: Provide grants of $5,000 each to improve the academic achievement of students by engaging in critical thinking and problem solving that deepen knowledge of standards-based subject matter. The work should also improve students’ habits of inquiry, self-directed learning, and critical reflection.
Applicants must be practicing U.S. public school teachers in grades PreK-12; public school education support professionals; or faculty or staff at public higher education institutions. Visit the NEA Foundation website for complete program information. The application deadline is February 1, 2008.
Congressional Research Awards
The Dirksen Congressional Center invites individuals with an interest in studying Congress, including political scientists, historians, and biographers, scholars of public administration or American studies to apply for a Congressional Research Award. Small Grants for Projects Designed by Women and Girls NEW!
The Open Meadows Foundation provides support to small and start-up nonprofit organizations for projects that benefit women and girls. Specifically, the Foundation supports projects that reflect the diversity of the community served, and projects that promote racial, social, economic, and environmental justice. Priority is given to projects, designed and implemented by women and girls, which have encountered obstacles in their search for funding. The Foundation provides grants of up to $2,000 to cover start-up expenses or to support ongoing projects. The annual application deadlines are February 15, 2008 and August 15, 2008. Support for Social Justice Projects in North America NEW!
The Peace Development Fund provides grants to organizations working to achieve peaceful, just, and interdependent relationships among people and nations. The Fund's Community Organizing Grants support grassroots groups that are organizing community members for social justice in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, and Haiti. Examples of issues that will be considered include criminal justice, environmental justice, economic justice, anti-oppression work, youth organizing, immigrant organizing, and workplace organizing. New Voices Grants NEW!
J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism invites U.S. nonprofit groups and education organizations to apply for funding to launch participatory news ventures and to share best practices and lessons learned from their efforts through the J-NewVoices.org Web site. Eligible to receive New Voices funding are 501(c)3 organizations and education institutions, including civic groups, community organizations, public broadcasters, schools, colleges and universities - and individuals working under the sponsorship of a nonprofit fiscal agent.Proposal deadline: February 20, 2008

The Foundation’s grantmaking priorities include organizations supporting outdoor adventure opportunities for the disabled in the U.S. and programs providing wheelchairs for the needy overseas. Do Something Offering Weekly Grants for Young Social Entrepreneurs

Do Something is a not-for-profit organization that works to inspire, support, and celebrate young social entrepreneurs and community activists. The organization is accepting applications for the following grant programs:
- Do Something and GameStop are offering grants of $500 each to young people, age 25 and younger, in the United States or Canada who have a great idea for a community-action project and need support to turn their idea into reality. GameStop grants are given out weekly.
- Do Something and Plum TV are offering grants of $500 each to social entrepreneurs, age 25 and younger, in the U.S. who have recently created a sustainable project, program, or organization and need funding to further the growth and success of their program. Plum TV grants are given out weekly.
