Recruiting Summer Associates

NC Campus Compact is working with Triad campuses to offer a pilot Summer Associate Americorps*VISTA program that will offer first generation college students an opportunity to serve on campuses, particularly within their programs and summer offerings that target disadvantaged youth and first generation students.  Students will receive a stipend and will benefit from collaboration and professional development with the other VISTAs.  Professional development will help them build on their early college success, as well as develop leadership skills.

If you have first generation students who will be living in the Triad during the summer, we ask you to encourage them to apply for this opportunity.  They can start the application process by contacting Jonathan Romm at jromm@elon.edu, or 336.278.7197.

National Service in the News

This has been a busy period in Washington, DC for the service movement. During the week of February 23, there was a press conference, a congressional hearing, and a mention in President Obama's address to Congress.  In addition, the new budget includes increases for national service.

Service for All Ages
On Tuesday, February 24, Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), Senator Thad Cochran (R-MS) and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) announced the introduction of their "Service for All Ages" initiative, a group of four bills that will expand and strengthen opportunities for Americans of all ages to serve their communities.  The initiative includes the Semester of Service Act, the Summer of Service Act, the AmeriCorps: Together Improving Our Nation (ACTION) Act, and the Encore Service Act.

Read the press release from Senator Dodd's office, watch a video of Senator Dodd's opening remarks, Latoya's remarks on the importance of youth service, and Senator Dodd's closing remarks or read two newspaper articles from the Hartford Current and The Day.

President Obama Calls For Renewed Spirit Of National Service
Speaking to a Joint Session of Congress on February 24, President Obama declared:
"And to encourage a renewed spirit of national service for this and future generations, I ask this Congress to send me the bipartisan legislation that bears the name of Senator Orrin Hatch as well as an American who has never stopped asking what he can do for his country - Senator Edward Kennedy."

President Obama was an original co-sponsor of the Kennedy-Hatch Serve America Act when it was first introduced last September. ServiceNation have published a comprehensive blog post with links to the speech transcript, full video, a press release and statement, and some media coverage: http://www.bethechangeinc.org/changewire/2009/02/25/president-obama-calls-for-renewed-spirit-of-national-service/

Congressional Hearing on Service
On February 25, recording artist Usher testified before the Committee on Education and Labor at a hearing examining how to renew America through national service and volunteerism.  The hearing built on the important conversations happening across the country on national service and volunteerism, examining the importance of national and community service in meeting critical economic needs across the country. TIME's Richard Stengel and former Senator Harris Wofford also testified.

Fiscal Year 2010 Budget

On February 26, President Obama released his budget request for Fiscal Year 2010.  The budget proposes $1.13 billion for the Corporation and its programs, an increase of $241 million from the 2009 likely enacted level.  The budget request would:

·         Expand AmeriCorps and set it on the path to expand from its current level of 75,000 positions to 250,000, and increase the amount of the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award.

·         Create a new Social Innovation Fund to test promising new approaches to major challenges, leverage private and foundation capital, and scale up research-proven programs.

·         Expand and improve Senior Corps to engage more Baby Boomers and retiring Americans in service to help meet needs in their communities.

·         Increase support for Learn and Serve America to expand service-learning in the nation’s schools and college campuses.

·         Strengthen the capacity of the Corporation to manage its programs, measure performance, and conduct rigorous evaluations to support growth and excellence in service.

You can read the text of the President’s budget relating to the Corporation and its programs by clicking here, or visiting the Corporation’s budget page.  As is customary when a new President takes office, and similar to all agencies across the government, today’s release is only a top line summary.  The full budget, including the Congressional Budget Justification with in-depth descriptions of all our programs and initiatives, will be released later this spring.

You can get the latest developments on the budget page on our website at www.NationalService.gov.

Service and the Economic Stimulus Package

The Corporation for National and Community Service has created a webpage where individuals can hear recordings of calls and access other information about the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funding that will engage citizens through service to address unmet needs and strengthen communities. http://www.nationalservice.gov/about/recovery/index.asp

AmeriCorps Week 2009!

Do you host the NC-ACTS!* AmeriCorps Program or AmeriCorps VISTA?  If so, you understand the benefit and powerful impact of the AmeriCorps program.  Please consider hosting an event during AmeriCorps Week to spread the word about national service!

What Is AmeriCorps Week?

AmeriCorps Week is a recruitment and recognition event designed to bring more Americans into service, salute AmeriCorps members and alums for their powerful impact, and thank the community partners who make AmeriCorps possible.

AmeriCorps Week provides an opportunity for AmeriCorps members, alums, grantees, program partners, and friends to shine a spotlight on the work done by members in communities across the country—and to motivate more Americans to join AmeriCorps or volunteer in their communities.

When is AmeriCorps Week?

The third annual AmeriCorps Week will take place May 9-16, 2009.

What Activities are Planned?

AmeriCorps Week events happen across the country. They include statewide AmeriCorps gatherings, award ceremonies, “AmeriCorps for a Day” events with local VIPs, community service projects, recruitment fairs, and more.

What Can I Do During AmeriCorps Week?

Those with a special interest in AmeriCorps are encouraged to use their creativity to mark the week in any way they see fit. For example, members and alumni could make presentations to students or community groups. Grantees could stage an open house, service project, or volunteer fair. Local officials and leaders could be asked to serve as an AmeriCorps member for a day. And members and programs could “spread the word” about the power of service by writing letters to the editor or blogging about their AmeriCorps service online.

Visit this link for the AmeriCorps Week website.
