Here We Grow Again!
We celebrate the addition of two community colleges as members which brings our number to 32 members including 4 community colleges. We welcome into our network President Dr. Michael R. Taylor (Stanly Community College - Albermarle, NC) and President Dr. Garrett D. Hinshaw (Catawba Valley Community College).
We look forward to working with our primary contacts for the new campuses, Julie Carpenter, Coordinator of Service Learning and Cooperative Education, (Stanly Community College) and Linda Lutz, Vice President for Servant Leadership and
Christina Little, Educational Support Services (Catawba Valley Community College). They join the Charlotte/Western region.
New Website Launched!
On Friday, September 7, the new NC Campus Compact website went live! We invite you to visit and spread the word. We also have a new way to access it at www.nccampuscompact.org. You may need to update any bookmarks and links to pages (included the student conference site link sent previously).
We are still in need of service-learning syllabi! .We only have a small number posted and most are a year old. Please invite your service-learning faculty to submit theirs for posting. They can send the attachment directly to Leslie Garvin, Assistant Director, at lgarvin@elon.edu. Visit the syllabi page at this link http://org.elon.edu/nccc/resources/syllabi.html
We hope that the new design is more user-friendly and current. Thanks for your patience over the last few months while we have been in the development process.
Campus Compact Annual Survey - Coming Soon!
It’s almost time again for the annual Campus Compact survey. As in past years, we will ask our member campuses to respond. The targeted date of release is October 1 and the deadline will be Friday, December 7. All our primary contacts will receive a membership-wide email from the national Campus Compact office announcing the survey.
Is it critical that as many members as possible respond to provide a broad perspective of Campus Compact activities. In recent years, this annual survey data has been picked up by news outlets and is consistently referenced. If at least 50% of state members respond, the national office will provide us with a report detailing our state's data compared to the national data. NC Campus Compact staff will send regular reminders.
Facilitators Sought for VISTA Professional Development
We are seeking presenters on the topics “Overcoming Student Apathy to Increase Volunteer Recruitment (October 18)” as well as “Creating Enticing Marketing (October 19)” for upcoming VISTA professional development workshops at Elon. Please contact Kristen Carter, VISTA Leader, at kcarter12@elon.edu or (336) 278-7197 if you know faculty or staff on your campus who may be interested in facilitating.

Western Carolina Welcomes New Assistant Director
This month we welcome Melanie Clark back to the North Carolina Campus Compact family. Melanie is the new Assistant Director of Service Learning at Western Carolina University. She previously served as the Director of Leadership and Community Service at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP). Under her leadership, UNCP began to build an infrastructure to utilize service learning as a teaching and learning method. Melanie is thrilled to join Western and rejoin the NC Campus Compact family.
2007-2008 National Youth Presidential Forum
On November 6, the first National High School/College Presidential forum will be webcast to approximately 20 million high school and college students, live and interactively. This event will allow students to pose questions of our candidates, discuss the answers during panel debates and vote in a validated on-line poll. Presidential candidates will participate in the forum from locations of their choice. The candidates will field questions from a moderator and students representing the National Honor Society from across the United States. Students will participate in an on-line, post-forum vote for the candidate they would choose in the Presidential election. Feedback about the candidate responses will be collected and provided to the candidates after the event.
This Presidential Forum is presented by Advanced Innovative Resources, Inc. in collaboration with EWN Foundation, Presidential Classroom, Lou Frey Institute at The University of Central Florida and the United States Association of Former Members of Congress.
