educational needs for realistic design experiences with the technological needs of the local communities
through service-learning. The conference format is designed to facilitate discussion and sharing of common
experiences, best practices, assessment strategies, institutionalization successes and lessons learned that can
be employed across campuses. The emphasis is on discussion and collaboration. There are no formal papers
at the conference but abstracts are published and archived on the EPICS Website. The annual conference is
made possible with funding from the National Science Foundation through a National Dissemination Grant
and is one way that the EPICS Program disseminates information on its model for community-based design
education. This annual conference is designed for coordinators of campus civic engagement efforts. The conference offers structured time for group gatherings, workshops, roundtable discussions, informal question and answer, and deep reflection about civic engagement work. Community-Campus Partnerships for Health 11th Summer Service-Learning Institute The institute is taught by national experts in service-learning, including health professional faculty and community leaders who have developed successful service-learning partnerships. A unique and effective component of the institute is an evidence-based* mentoring model in which participants work in small groups and as individuals with mentors (the term we use for institute instructors) to further shape their own action plans for service-learning. The institute is purposefully kept small (no more than 24 participants) to foster a learning community and maximize the opportunities for mentoring. The institute features content and sessions for both novice and experienced service-learning practitioners (faculty, staff and community partners). Novice and experienced practitioners spend beginning and closing sessions together, as well as all meals and at least one plenary session. The remainder of the 3+ day institute features separate sessions designed to focus on issues particular to each group's unique experience level and situation. Mentors assist participants to deepen their understanding of service-learning, develop a plan for service-learning sustainability, and form a peer support network that continues long after the institute ends. Past institutes have drawn participants from a wide variety of disciplines and professions, as well as those from public health agencies and community-based organizations that have service-learning partnerships with such programs. Participants have come from Argentina, Australia, Canada and the US. Applications are due April 10, 2008. We encourage early applications as attendance is limited to 24 participants and past years' institutes have had waiting lists. Download an application here. The Washington Center's Campaign 2008 Presidential Seminar Series The Washington Center has been organizing these civic engagement seminars every presidential cycle since 1984. The national convention programs include a fieldwork component that assigns students to work in some capacity related to the convention. This is the ultimate civic engagement activity--a chance to learn what goes on behind the scenes at the national political conventions while learning and contributing to the work of the media, state party delegations, interest groups, host city organizations, and candidate organizations.
