National Gardening Association: Healthy Sprouts Awards
The mission of the National Gardening Association (NGA) is to promote home, school, and community gardening as a means to renew and sustain the essential connections between people, plants, and the environment. The NGA Healthy Sprouts Awards support school garden programs throughout the country that use the garden to teach youth about nutrition and the issue of hunger in the United States. Winning programs will receive $200 or $500 gift certificates from Gardener's Supply Company, seed packets, and literature from NGA. Applicants must plan to garden in 2010 with at least 15 children between the ages of 3 and 18 years. The application deadline is October 17, 2009. The President William Jefferson Clinton Hunger Leadership Award
This award was created to honor President Clinton for his commitment to humanitarian causes, most especially his commitment to eradicating hunger. The NC State University Center for Student Leadership, Ethics & Public Service (CSLEPS) in partnership with Stop Hunger Now, a non-profit hunger relief organization, presented the first award to John Coggin, an NC State student as part of President Clinton's visit to North Carolina State University on January 26, 2009.
The award will be presented annually to a student from a U.S. based college or university. Stop Hunger Now will provide a cash award for the recipient to use towards an educational experience that will advance their knowledge and understanding of hunger and related issues. The award will be presented at the Hunger Summit at Auburn University on Feb 26-28, 2010. The deadline to post videos is October 31, 2009.

Become a Make A Difference Day Honoree
Make A Difference Day, created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, is a national day of helping others – a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Young and old, individuals and groups, are all encouraged to carry out volunteer projects in their communities. The projects may be as ambitious as collecting truckloads of clothing for the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor or relative. Everyone who volunteers on October 24, 2009 and submits an entry form by November 16, 2009 is eligible to become a national honoree. Newman's Own will support Make A Difference Day by donating $10,000 to charities selected by each of the ten national honorees. Democracy Video Challenge NEW!
The Democracy Video Challenge invites students from around the world to create video shorts that complete the phrase: "Democracy is..." in an effort to enhance the global dialogue on democracy.
The Democracy Video Challenge is a unique partnership comprising democracy, and youth organizations, the film and entertainment industry, academia, and the U.S. government. In its inaugural year, the Challenge attracted more than 900 videos from 95 countries around the world.
Videos must be three minutes or less and can be any style: fiction or documentary, animated or live action. Participants must be 18 or older. Prizes include an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., exposure to filmmakers and the U.S. film industry, and meetings with democracy advocates from government, media and civil society. Samuel Huntington Public Service Award
National Grid is sponsoring this award to be given to graduating college seniors who design a proposal for a year-long service project. National Grid will then fund the student's project. Applicants can be from any state or country in the world, and do not have to be a U.S. citizen. The application deadline is February 15, 2010. www.nationalgridus.com/huntington.asp
