World Bank Essay Contest: “Shaping the City of Your Dreams”
The 2008 World Bank Essay contest has been launched. Youth ages 18-25 are eligible to apply and prizes of $1000 to $5,000 will be given away. Winners will be announced on April 30 and honored at the Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics in South Africa in June. The submission deadline is March 23, 2008. Sponsored by the National League of Cities, the Awards for Municipal Excellence identify and showcase outstanding city and town programs that improve the quality of life in America's communities. IARSLCE
Research Award NEW!
The IARSLCE Research Award recognizes outstanding career contributions to scholarly endeavors addressing service-learning and community engagement. It is designed to recognize research that systematically addresses the exploration and understanding of the field. For the purpose of this award, “research” is broadly defined to include all paradigms of scholarly endeavor, with particular emphasis on empirically-based research. The recipient is expected to give an address at the annual research conference that relates to his/her research the year after receiving the award.
Criteria For Eligibility:
This award is intended to recognize any researcher who has a distinguished record of research and scholarly contributions on service-learning and community engagement, with particular emphasis on programmatic research.
Criteria for Evaluation:
1. Quantity and quality of research productivity.
2. Impact of research as indicated by (a) one or more seminal works, (b) total corpus of research or innovative research design, and (c) patterns of citation.
3. Impact on other researchers and scholars, as measured by adaptations and inclusion of works in new research activity
4. Impact on practitioners as measured by contributions to conferences or other training and dissemination activities
5. Impact on professional development of other scholars as measured by record of teaching, mentoring, collaboration, grants, or provision of opportunities for dissemination (created a center, journal, conference, recognition program, or other venues) that have supported and contributed to research by others
6. Leadership as measured by international reputation, collaborative spirit, overall impact, voice of in the field, and sustained contributions.
Process for Evaluation:
Applications will be reviewed by an IARSLCE award committee comprised of four past award recipients. The committee will make a recommendation to the IARSCLE Board, and the Board will make the selection.
Submission Procedures:
Nominations for the award can be submitted by anyone, including self-nominations. Documentation to support the nomination should include an electronic submission of the following:
. a citation of approximately 100 words
. a two-page cover letter from a senior scholar indicating the qualifications and achievements of the nominee
. a two-page statement by the nominee of current research accomplishments and future directions
. a current copy of the nominee's resume or curriculum vitae
. two letters of support from individuals who can attest to the quality and impact of the nominee’s research.
Deadline: Complete applications must be received by May 2, 2008. Please submit nominations to the attention of the Research Award Committee Chair, at info@researchslce.org.
The award recipient will be notified in early July. The award recipient receives an invitation to make a presentation at the annual IARSLCE conference, a plaque (to be presented at the conference), a monetary award, and complimentary IARSLCE conference registration and accommodation.
2nd Annual AmeriCorps Video Contest NEW!
AmeriCorps is turning to its network of members and alums for help in recruiting the next class of AmeriCorps members by hosting its second YouTube-style video contest. The contest asks participants to create a 60 second spot answering the question " Why AmeriCorps??" Entries can address topics such as how AmeriCorps tackles some of America's biggest challenges; what AmeriCorps means to you; and why someone should join AmeriCorps.
The grand prize is a volunteer vacation worth up to $5,000 courtesy of Travelocity through its Travel For Good Change Ambassadors program. Second prize is an iPod Shuffle, and third prize is an AmeriCorps Alums Prize Pack, both courtesy of AmeriCorps Alums. The five semifinalists will receive a free one-year membership from AmeriCorps Alums.
The contest is limited to current AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps alums who have successfully completed their service. A panel of judges will select five semifinalists by May 9. The semifinalist entries will then be available for viewing and voting on the AmeriCorps video contest website during AmeriCorps Week from May 11-18. The top three videos will be unveiled at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service taking place June 1-3 in Atlanta.

Festival VidéEau Video Contest
The Festival VidéEau is an international competition for video clips organized by the International Secretariat for Water (ISW) that invites young people aged from 17 to 30, to submit 90 second or shorter video clips on the theme "Water, People and Sustainable Development". The winners of the competition will be announced at a prize-giving ceremony to be held during the World Youth Congress, taking place in Quebec, Canada, in August 2008. IARSLCE Dissertation Award NEW!
The IARSLCE Dissertation Award recognizes a dissertation that advances research on service-learning
and/or community engagement through rigorous and innovative inquiry.
Criteria for Eligibility:
Applicants can be from any academic discipline. They must have successfully defended their dissertation
between June 1, 2006 and June 30, 2008.
Criteria for Evaluation:
Applications will be evaluated based on the quality of the research summary and the strength of the
dissertation advisor’s letter of recommendation. Exemplary dissertations will address important questions, develop robust theoretical or conceptual frameworks, demonstrate the use of rigorous data collection and analysis, show compelling conclusions, and expand on the study’s results to suggest important implications for theory/research on service-learning and/or community engagement.
Process for Evaluation:
Applications will be reviewed by an award committee, comprised of at least two members of the IARSLCE Board of Directors and two members of IARSLCE. The committee will make a recommendation to the IARSCLE Board, and the Board will make the selection.
Submission Procedures:
Applicants should submit the following materials electronically:
. One-page title sheet stating the applicant’s name, mailing and e-mails addresses, phone number, institution name, program, name of advisor, and date of successfully defended dissertation.
. Summary statement of the dissertation. The summary must not exceed five single-spaced, typed pages and should address the following:
1. Purpose/Problem
2. Theoretical/Conceptual Framework
3. Methods and Data Sources
4. Results/Conclusions
5. Significance of the study for theory/research or practice related to service-learning and/or community engagement.
. One letter of recommendation from the dissertation chair
. Nominee’s resume or curriculum vitae
