Direct Service versus Member Development/Training Activities

80% of a members hours must involve direct service activities or activities that directly impact the site or clients. This is approximately 240 hours. A member may choose to complete all 300 hours in direct service.
Examples of Direct Service activities may include:
- Assessing community assets and needs for services
- Tutoring or mentoring kids K-12
- Recruiting, training, placing volunteers for non-profit organizations
- Performing case management
- Delivering food and supplies to homebound community members
- Building homes for low-income community members
- Attending to clients in healthcare facilities
- Working with parents and families on educational needs and family literacy programs
20% of a members hours can include member development/training activities or activities that assist the member in gaining skills and information necessary for them to better engage in their direct service activities. This is approximately 60 hours. Please do not complete more than 60 hours of member development activities during your NC-ACTS! term of service. Every hour over must be made up in direct service (ex. If a member completes 70 hours of indirect, they must do a total of 240 hours of direct service to complete the program)
In-Direct Service activities include but are not limited to:

- Reflection Sessions
- Orientation and training at the Site
- Professional training and development directed at improving skills, knowledge and self awareness
- Academic classes that provide added skill/knowledge for direct service activities
- Meetings for reflection, planning, and peer exchanges
- AmeriCorps Orientations, meetings and conferences
- Development, implementation, and/or involvement in peer training
- Professional conferences and workshops relevant to direct services
