(Pathways to Achieving Civic Engagement)

Conference Highlights

On February 11, 2009 nearly 250 faculty, staff, students and community partners representing 36 colleges and universities in five states attended the 2009 P.A.C.E. Conference at Elon University. 

Workshops

Throughout the day a total of 32 workshops were presented by 107 faculty, staff, students and community partners! The workshops explored various aspects of effective civic engagement work including sessions on theory and research, program development and "how to" information. There were also workshops targeting all levels of knowledge and expertise from novice practitioners to advanced practitioners.

Luncheon and Keynote

During the luncheon program Dr. Leo Lambert, President of Elon University, gave a welcome on behalf of the NC Campus Compact Executive Board, then presented the 2009 Robert L. Sigmon Service-Learning Award to Pamela Kiser, MSW, of Elon University. On hand was Robert L. Sigmon, the award namesake, as well as the three previous recipients.  For more details visit the Sigmon Award

This year, NC Campus Compact also acknowledged Dr. Patti Clayton of NC State University who was a finalist for the national Campus Compact Leadership Award for Campus and Community Engagement. This award honors the work of campus staff members whose job focuses on building structures and programs to connect students with their communities through service and other forms of civic engagement.

Following the award presentation Dr. Lisa Keyne introduced keynote speaker, Jamie Merisotis, President of the Lumina Foundation for Education, who spoke on "Fulfilling the Promise of the Engaged Campus."

Opening and Closing Sessions

The Opening Session included remarks by Dr. Lisa Keyne, NC Campus Compact Executive Director and a welcome by Dr. Deborah Long, Coordinator of Civic Engagement at Elon University.  During the Closing Session, NC Campus Compact staff presented door prizes to participants.
